Howdy, Nona ( slydog) wanted to see what the orbicular flint nodules look like on the exterior so here are a few pics. Really don't look like much. The smaller ones six inches or so across seem to be the best and they're just plain white on the outside except you can see the rings and orbs if you have sharp eyes. Easiest way to pick them out is to watch for ones the bulldozer broke in half *S*.....Mel Typical nodules: Closer look. See the rings. Almost look like Botswana agate rough. Other side with old break showing the orbs:

It always amazes me how flint is deceptive in it's outer appearance. You have some great flint around your place! Fran

Mel, I bet flint knappers would like that stuff. It would make some nice looking arrowheads and flint knives with those circles in it. I tried knapping for a while, I could make some fairly decent looking knives out of obsidian, but never mastered the harder materials.

Thanks for showing me this Mel. I figured this stuff was tricky, although I did see the orbs right away but they are not 'stunning' to begin with if you don't know what you are looking for. And of course I would not know until seeing thses pics--so thanks for taking the time and effort to show me, I do appreciate it Nona

Bob: Judging by the amount of chips and broken pieces around, this material was very popular with native Americans. Now it's often called rootbeer flint, or Pedernales flint/chert and is still a well known napping material. Funny though, the real orby banded stuff seems to be quite localized in occurence while the vein material which is mostly banded is much more broadly distributed...Mel
