Tuesday I went to Graveyard point again and found not far from the road, about 20 out from the other side of the canal (for those who know the place), a big rock! I will post some photos too, but it looks to me like it might have some promise inside there. Anyway, my questions: Are there rock shops/individuals who slab for a price? If so what is the going rate? Opinions on if it is in fact promising? I contacted someone locally last night and he charges .80 per square inch. He said it would be $50.40 per slice. I figured out the approx. slabs@ 1/4 inch thick from this rock would cost me $1800.00 !!!!!!! (if I figured correctly) I am not knocking his quote, he can charge whatever he wants, I know the blades are very expensive. But I am just wondering if I should put that idea out of my head, finding someone to do it for me. The rock is 9 x 8 x6. I keep thinking I have a hunk of prime rib on the counter Thanks. Nancy

That's a nice looking find! :-) There are several members of the board who will slab rock for you for a percentage of the rock. One half of the rock is typical, but I noticed somebody only keeps a quarter (forgot who). Catmandew (Tony) cut a rock for me and sent me a bunch of great slabs along with my half of the rock. Chuck

I'll do it for half also. If Tony does better than that, go for it. Curt

I can cut it for you, and actually we are fairly close to each other. I am headed that way next week so I can probably pick it up and then the next time I am out that way I can drop it off, or if you are this way you can pick it up. If I get into it and it is not a good slabbing rock I will stop cutting and not waste any more diamonds and time. Right now I have all my big saws down, but I hope to have them up and running again soon. If that works, let me know and we can get in touch with each other. If you want to send it on to anyone else who has offered that is fine and you will not hurt my feelings.
Any snow at graveyard at all?
Tony

I would slab rocks for a portion of the rock as well. But no one lives close to me. I like slabbing rocks.

Nancy: Most slab for half, which has been the norm for many years. Friends do not always hold to that 'rule'. Tony, being one of the nicest board members will probably do you good, and lives closer. Even does pick up and delivery! Very nice of me to speak for someone else, eh! Graveyard Point is high one my places to collect, and if I can make it out that way, I might do some slabbing for some guiding.........I have read, that finding ones way in, is a wee bit tricky. nancyid ---in about the third & fourth pic down there looks to be some fracture lines -- you may want to lightly tap it and see if that comes apart easily ( may give you a better idea of what's inside ) --- I would normally slab too for a 1/3 -1/2 -- I always try to call after I receive it and talk about what I see as pics are some what different than looking at it in person --------- sounds like tony has everyone beat tho ! ;D you just don't want a chip popping out while you're sawing and bend/ruin a $400 blade
