Could be an orbicular rhyolite but I really have no idea. Sure looks like it will be pretty when you cut it! Fran

Beef: It's called pisolite ( fish egg stone) but I think it is a form of orbicular rhyolite.....Mel

Mel, is that similar to Oolite? I purchased some very similar stuff a few years back that was being called Oolite. Granted, what I purchased as Oolite might have actually been pisolite!

I was going to say orbicular rhyolite. I have never heard of pisolite. Thanks Mel.

Only way I've seen oolite and pisolite defined is by the size of the orbs. Oolite if the orbs are 2mm or smaller, pisolite if they are larger than 2mm. Many of the forms are calcite/limestone based so are not orbicular rhyolite. In the calcium carbonate forms the spheres may have a nucleus formed around some form of fossil..Mel

Thanks, Mel. By those definitions, I have Pisolite instead of Oolite. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

I have to read these posts just to see Mel's answers. He is the best reference, identification, guide and location encyclopedia I know.

These orbs are in the vicinity of 1 cm across. ![](https://img1.etsystatic.com/016/0/5983131/il_570xN.459865119_d9lc.jpg) So do you think this is pisolite??

Yup, pisolite if the orbs are more than 2mm and yours are 10 and it's typical to have the orbs built up in layers around some sort of nucleus......Mel

End cut of some I have. Mine is very dense and hard. Takes a great polish. ![](http://i907.photobucket.com/albums/ac274/jakesrocks/101E0372.jpg) ![](http://i907.photobucket.com/albums/ac274/jakesrocks/101E0374.jpg)

Great to know!!! ![http://scontent-b-mia.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/600774_10151746518858689_1131341133_n.jpg](http://scontent-b-mia.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/600774_10151746518858689_1131341133_n.jpg) Now... why isn't orbicular rhyolite also pisolite? Like this: ![http://scontent-b-mia.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/1044554_10151746519568689_463893746_n.jpg](http://scontent-b-mia.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/1044554_10151746519568689_463893746_n.jpg) Also... is this pisolite? ![http://scontent-b-mia.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/1001312_10151746533578689_1339631143_n.jpg](http://scontent-b-mia.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/1001312_10151746533578689_1339631143_n.jpg) What about this one? (what IS this one?) ![http://scontent-a-mia.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/1001050_10151746542658689_779804455_n.jpg](http://scontent-a-mia.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/1001050_10151746542658689_779804455_n.jpg) Well, while I'm asking... what could this one be? ![http://scontent-a-mia.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/1017192_10151746542758689_1706621510_n.jpg](http://scontent-a-mia.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/1017192_10151746542758689_1706621510_n.jpg)
