hey y'all, Betty and I are going to branson missouri this coming weekend 27 feb - 1 mar 09. Are there any good rock hounding spots close by or within maybe an hour drive? I know we will be in the foothills of the Ozarks...so, any info would be great Thanks Steve

Theres lots of cherts all around there, some blue/red colors, they polish up really well. Anywhere near Taneycomo, Table Rock or Bull Shoals. If you see any construction sites where all they'd done is leveled, thats a good place to find some quartz and cherts. I've been finding some cool mineral specimens around the dam off 165, its in the large white rocks. They brought those in from somewhere (can't remember) and if you get to looking on them, you will find calcite, quartz and some other cool stuff I haven't figured out what it is yet.
I've not found fossils on land, but we find some fossils in table rock when we dive it, mostly shells and such, but they are pretty neat. I'm normally on a boat when I'm at the lakes.
Good luck and have fun!
