Hi,
My young son got a rock tumbler for Christmas and he's thrilled using it. I have to admit I don't know much about but we are both aware that the Grit must be disposed of carefully.
We live in a rural area surrounded by wetlands and can easily dump the grit in the woods, but I'm not sure we should? I don't want to damage the wetlands or wildlife. As I said I don't know much about this subject and was lucky enough to stumble across this site. Sorry for my ignorance., but any advice?

The grit is organic, and of course ground rock is ground rock, so you can dump it out back if you like (provided you aren't tumbling things that are high in copper, mercury, and probably some others; since this is your son's tumbler, he likely won't be tumbling those things for quite some time).
If you're concerned, you can always dump the sludge in a container and let the water evaporate out, then throw the whole thing in the trash once it is full.
Steve's post reminded me that I forgot something: don't dump the burnish (Borax, soap, whatever you use) out in the woods. It can safely go down the drain.
Hope that helps, Chuck

I have a gravel driveway and dump everything there. If the borax or anything kills the weeds, that's just bonus.

Yes, the borax isn't good for the grass. I pour it where I don't want things to grow!
The reason the grit must be disposed of carefully is not because of any hazard to human life, just hazardous to plumbing as it builds up and turns to something like cement...

Thanks everyone. We didn't see any Toxic warnings on the bags, but wanted to make sure we were doing the responsible thing. And this seemed to be the place to find out.
I'm sure we'll be back with more basic questions.
