I've been wanting to move past the tumbling stage and get into cabbing for a while now so I finally got off my butt yesterday and put this together.I never start a project until I have everything I need for material. The Rock Lady sent my diamond wheels earlier this week and I was waiting for a day off to assemble the unit.I started early Sat. morning worked for a few hours and took a 4 hour break for my sons karate tournament and got done about dinner time. The motor is a Dayton DC variable speed 0-1750 rpm reversible.I got this from an industrial surplus shop for about $100 with the speed control unit. The arbor fits right on the shaft and came from Mcmaster Carr for about $6.The water pump came from my local Harbor Freight store on sale for $8.The disks from Rock Lady went for around $100,I got the 8 inch ones mounted on the aluminum backer plates. The slabs come off my saw pretty smooth so I went with 180-400-1200-1800 and plan on doing final polish in my vibrating flat lap.For cabs I think I'll polish in one of my vibe tumblers but I do plan on building a Genie style cab machine. She hasnt dicovered the missing tupperware yet the bowl is just a cutoff 5 gal. bucket Yes, there is a motor under all that wiring. The motor came off an industrial fixture and had wires that went to a series of limit switchs,I just connected the ones I needed to get it to work and left the others in place. Thank for looking,Mike

Wahoo!!! There's no going back now! Is the motor/controller from a local 'industrial surplus shop' or online? At first I thought I was looking in my garage, till I realized there was too much flat space (available work area) ;D. Nice work, now let's see some product!!! (some people are never satisfied : Dr Joe .

The motor came from a surplus shop.I had to take it off the machine it was on myself.I also got this nice angle drive unit that it was attached to but I dont know if I will ever have a use for it.The model # is Dayton 4z284d.There is one on ebay now,the starting bid is $100 just for the control box so I think I got a good deal for the control, motor and drive unit.I found another online but you have to request the price from the dealer.Lots of industrial surplus here in Connecticut because of all the factories closing up.The best by far is Pratt and Whitney Aircraft's surplus store in East Hartford, they have a huge amount of stuff for sale and you could spend hours digging thru what they have.If you're a do it yourself scrounger like me you better bring a truck if you ever go there! As far as cabbing goes it is a whole new adventure for me.I'm gonna pick up a work force saw this week to cut the preforms,my 10 inch saw is set up for slabbing and it got a little bit to messy trying to cut freehand.Without the cover. I had oil mist coating everything in the area including me.I'm off work today because we got a foot of snow last night so maybe I'll run over to Home Depot after the roads are plowed. Mike

Chuck, yes, that's the arbor I used.Probably the same one Harbor Freight sells but Mcmaster Carr has very fast shipping so I went with them. Mike

Hey Mike,
Great work! I have one suggestion. As you begin cabbing you might find you have your splash shield too high. This will cause you to hold your dops at an odd angle. Your splash shield only needs to be about 1/4 to 1/2 inch above your lap. I'm going by my All-U-Need 8" flat lap and years of experience with that machine.
Again, great work. That baby will last you forever...
Rick

Rick, you're right,I plan on cutting it back some.I also need to make a small stand for it,I'm 6ft. and I have to practically stand on my tippy toes to use it mounted on the bench it's on in the pics. Mike

Just cut down the front or wherever your hand goes at first to see just how much you really need to remove. As far as the right angle drive, have you seen those 12"- 16" bench mounted buffers . Dr Joe .

Nice... I been having problems find a motor with variable speed. I have a old motor that 1750 RPM but not sure if it can be adjusted variable or not.
Thanks for the ideas.

4936musse the machine shown in this 6 year old thread has a DC motor. Your 1750 Rpm motor is not made for a speed control if it's an AC motor, you will need to go with a belt drive and pulleys to have more than one speed.
