Wow .... I have been given a few pieces of pet wood and had no idea they tumbled and polished that beauitfully!!
Guess I need to start making my list of what stuff to cut first and tumble.
Thanks for the pics .... they are great!

You got a really great shine there. How long did each stage? I am going to take some of mine that didn't take a good shine and run through another polish stage. Maybe it will help

I have some Wood that has worm (paths ) thru it. In the eaten away areas there is little grainy looking material (bits ) similar to yours. You don't suppose you might have put a first class killer shine on some wood eating grub do-do, do ya ?

Wow Don, That is really an impressive batch of wood! In truth, it is about the best wood tumble I have seen! Most that I have done seems to split a bit. I do love the gravely look you have in some also! Very cool! Fran

Beautiful Don! Killer shine, as usual. I particularly like the speckled ones. Thanks for sharing!

Very nice batch. The pattern in the last few pictures is really cool.

Great shine! Good eye to catch that speckeled stuff. Your guess as to its source is interesting as well.

Out of curiosity, what were the measures of grit and polish you used for each stage?
Did you use a rotary or vibe?

In the last picture if you look , you can make out the tunnels the critter made in the wood. Those pieces are so well polished it's like looking thru a window back in time Harley

I bought some wood from catmandewe last year, but did not have the same results as you did. You have got to share what you did to get this awesome finish on these.

Beautiful batch, the shapes and the shine are perfect as always and the patterns are also beautiful. The sandy pieces are very interesting.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!! Several people asked for my recipe -- 60/90 until smoothed, with weekly cleanings and recharges... for these stones probably an average of 6 weeks, maybe double that for the really big ones, and half or less for the small pieces (I remove them when they are done and add new material). Then 120/220 for a week, 500F silicon carbide for 10 days, and these were polished for 22 days in aluminum oxide, then cleaned up for a few hours with ivory soap. Everything in a rotary tumbler, and I begin adding pellets in fine grind (120/220). agatemaggot - I like the poo idea, but I don't think that's the case. The fact that the grains are many different colors makes me think they are the original sand grains, petrified poo would all be one color I think. But you never know! Someone mentioned worm holes in petrified wood -- that's something I don't find too often, but a few years back I did find a really nice example, so I'll add that picture in here. The holes of course are completely filled in with silica, but the pattern remains. -Don
