Finally made a trip up the coast of Florida today. Honeymoon Island (used to be called Mud Island) is now a Florida State Park. It is known to be the location to find agatized coral. I spent about 2 hours there this morning slipping and sliding over rocks at the beach. My sandals fell apart (and they were good, river rafting, sturdy sandals) but I kept at it. Not exactly sure what to look for, but I came home with about 30 - 40 lb. of rock. I sliced a heel and two small slabs tonight and it looks like I picked up some of the right stuff. Not spectacular, but I've got a lotta cuttin' to do! I'll keep everyone posted on the results. Susan2

Hi Keith, On the beach. It's very rocky in some spots. I'm hoping to get some more info about what to look for more specifically. Hard to take a saw with you, but next time I'll take my rock pick. I'll keep you posted on what I find out and post photos if any of the stuff I got is worth it. Susan

I'm still sorting through what I brought back. I posted a few pix in Specimens, but so far nothing exceptional. I'm hoping to make a trip in the next week or so with my son. He's much more resilient than my daughter, and he has the eyes of a hawk. I'll keep "y'all" posted! Susan

hey susan, have you tried the south side of Tampa. I have heard of a few places that they are being found like the stuff found at the Davis Island area. There is some found on HM as wellMy old sites are now gone, houses sitting on top of 100 acres of an old coral bed.sad. More and more people are trying to find the old sites.

I'm heading back up this weekend with my son. Any specifics on locations would really be appreciated. Most of what I brought back last weekend is darker....black with some reddish areas. Also many pieces that show the crossgrain like "jcpnic"s 1,2,10 photos.

Maybe it's time for a Florida rockhounds trip like they do in the midwest. Anyone interested?

Cut a few today. Some very interesting patterns in toffees, whites, creams. Definitely coral. I will try to post photos in a few days. I go back to work tomorrow and won't have a real break until Sunday. I "semi-cabbed" one piece to see how it worked. It tests as agate/jasper on the Moh's scale but it works a lot faster and smoother than other agates I've tried.

I saw mention of a possible rockhounding event here in Florida and I would certainly be interested. I hope the idea didn't die off.
