Thought I'd post a few things I do with rocks. I used to make what's called forever gel candles years ago. I mostly made them with seashells or glass critters and all. I've suddenly in the last year, had some requests from older customers. I had a bit left and last year through a rock one together. The gel doesn't burn, I place a glass votive holder in the gel so a tea light or votive candle can be burned. When dark, the candle light makes the gel reflect all the light, its very hard to photograph, but they make one terrific night light. Pardon the pour photos, but you get the idea. I am considering buying more gel and making somemore with shells and rocks - since I have tons and tons of each. A seascape candle I made about 4 or more years ago. a couple taken in the dark so you get an idea This is the rock one I made. I didn't have many polished rocks at this time, but realized, you probably don't have to use polished rocks as the gel is a resin and mineral oil compound, so the rock will have the wet shine anyways I think. I'm thinking some of my thin agate slabs would be awesome in these.

Chinook .... I am an amateur candle maker and love the idea of using rocks and shells in candles.
I just have not been able to figure out exactly (without being distasteful) how to use such beautiful (raw and polished) rocks.
You have now spawned another direction of ideas for me and I will try to make use of your idea and run with it.
Thank you for sharing this .... I love them!!!!

Have fun with it Julie. I used to make so many with sea shells, then got the idea to use slabs since some are transparent.
The gel is penreco brand. I used to get it through different internet suppliers, but ebay seems to be the cheapest way to go now. It's not cheap stuff. But it's fun! You can actually use it to burn like wax, but I liked it best this way, the gel never burned and literally can last forever. The seashell candle in the picture is at least 8 years old, the rock one I made maybe 2 or 3 years ago. You just keep adding a tealight or votive candle and you have a great little light! Sandy

That's pretty cool! Did you know you can get REAL clear gel wax that actually DOES burn?! :cheesy: I made half a dozen of them for Christmas gifts a couple years ago using polished rocks and shells etc. the two I made from the wax I had left went like hotcakes once the word got out! The wax is pretty pricey but if you keep the size reasonable it's not so bad. I'm thinking of making more to sell at the local swap meet once I get my chit together and try to actually sell some of the stuff I've been tinkering with making. I'm not sure if I have any pictures of the ones I made but I'll take a look and see if I can find any...

Thats what this gel is, its for gel candles, I don't wick them anymore. Ebay is the best price if you get 35 pounds, can't remember the seller, but she buys direct from Penreco, I used to get it by the 5 gallon bucket.
You can get it in light medium and heavy, heavy is great for suspending things, I have tons and tons of glass fish and the heavy density will support their weight, the medium sort of does, but if you burn the candle, they will sometimes try to sink. I switched over to them without the wick, and just sink a votive glass into them with a votive or tealight, then the scene never burns, it stays "forever" ;D
