Howdy folks, Well spent some time this afternoon wasting good flint *L*. I tried working points down from a flint vein this time and man, i had a heap of trouble. It really ain't as easy as it seems. At one point I had a dandy knife and just had to try to go one freaking step further to make it just a little bit better and I broke it to smithereens. Out of three attempts, I managed this one point, a three inch Kinney dart point. For this one I used Harley's small copper bopper to percussion shape the piece and finished it by pressure flaking the edges. This puppie is sharp and Harley, to answer your question in advance, I cut myself twice today so blood was shed on the alter of the flintknapping gods. *L*. Anyway, here are pics of both sides....Mel

Looks real good Mel. I still haven't tried making any out of flint, how much tougher is it to work with over obsidian?

Sas: *LOL* Well, flint don't cut me as much as obsidian used to but man, is it harder to throw off flakes with the pressure flakers. It takes a lot of pressure with the wrist and legs ( if using the ishi stick). On the other hand I'm not using heat treated blanks but working on the flint right out of the creek beds. And flint is way more forgiving than obsidian because it's flat out tough and you can whack it pretty hard during the percussion process. I think overall I like the colors and patterns in flint better too but them that may be because it's all so new to me.....Mel

Mel, your 'point' is really very nice, but your version of making it made me laugh out loud--sorry, but it's true. Maybe I'm just easy to amuse........ I truly cannot imagine actually making one of those. You done good!!! Nona

Very nice, and totally worth the effort. And, btw, I agree with you about flint vs. obsidian.
