I will be taking I15 from southern Utah through Nevada, into California in a couple of weeks. I will have a little time both coming and going to stop and do some exploring. Does anyone have any suggestions for some places to hunt? Thanks in advance

The I-15 corridor is not really much of a sample of Nevada, its mostly crossing through on dry basins, I admit that I'm a lot more familiar with the northern reaches of the state, but even up north you have to go pretty far off the main roads for the better collecting sites. And so it's going to depend a lot on how much you consider to be "a little time"?
Some of the folks that live down that way might have better and more specific suggestions...

I'm in Pahrump, about 60 miles west of Vegas.
There are several possibilities along the I15, between the Cali state line and Barstow. However, it depends what you're driving and how much time you have for collecting. If you're in a 4WD truck and have a full day, Afton Canyon would be great for you. If you're in a passenger car with just a few hours to kill, I don't personally know of any places along there that would accomodate that, but Mel might.
If you don't mind taking a bit of a detour and you have 6 to 8 hours to spare, I'd be happy to take you up to The Blue Mule Mine, just outside of Pahrump, for Chrysocolla. Your detour would consist of taking hiway 160 from Vegas to Pahrump, then when you leave here you'd take hiway 178 west to 127 south to I15 (they intersect at Baker). Reverse that if you'd want to do it on your return trip.

Michael John, I wish I had a day to spare but only have a few hours. Thanks for the great offer, maybe I can take you up on it another trip.

Consider it an open invitation then. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Collie: Two easy places for a quick hunt along hwy 15 are Field Siding and Yermo dump. Take Field road south off 15 east of Barstow and walk out into the badlands towards and past the railroad tracks. Lots of agate, jasper, wood etc. Another quick and easy one is take Mineola RD by Yermo and go up by the dump on the early man site road. Good agate, bog, palm root etc mainly in earth tones in the gravel road cut to the dump and south of the dump pit. I think the Early Man site area is now closed to collecting but in the ravines north of the dump used to be very good hunting too. Regular vehicle should be able to access both these areas. If you've got a high clearance or 4 By, follow the dirt road along the freeway east of the dump into the ash hills. Lots of various quartz gems around there......Mel
