Sands, I used to clean all of my rock with water and a brush after I hounded. Now I just let them soak in water overnight and rinse them off the next day. Same result, MUCH less work. Water is a great abrasive ... worked well for the Grand Canyon.

I want to thank everyone for your replies, remarks, and comments about using sand. It just an idea. It's nice to know I'm not the only idiot who discovered it. Bottom line: If you are out of 60/90, waiting on your order from The Rock Shed, like me. Have an empty barrel and rough rocks that want a free ride in sand, or just water by themselves. I would let them play, till your shippment arrives. Good luck and God Bless. Tom

What about using sand blasting material? You can buy a 55lbs bag of medium for 11 bucks at the local harware store and you can order fine and course....probably a 100 grit ide say easy....why not? for the price?

Has anyone tried metal shavings, like from a machine shop as a pre to 60/90?

I wouldn't venture into using metal shavings, but have thought about it. Due to the fact they might tear up the inside of the barrel, or get lodged in the rubber sides. If you forget it was once used with metal shavings it may affect your next polishing stages.

Has anyone ever tried Amythest dust? This metal shop has some for .50 / Lb. Whey use it tp cut metal shooting it with water. It's about 80-90 grit they said.

Anything is worth a try. Recently placed some amethist and smokey quarts in a batch with 6 tbl spoons of sand from my front yard to let run for 100 hours, and will recharge soon, they seem to be rounding nicely. Will let them run another 100 hours before first stage of 60/90. Anything will work, but not as great as the real stuff they recomend. Happy tumblein...... Tom
