I'm slowly working on the backlog I have on my dop sticks, trying to clear a space rather than just cut new ones like I had been doing. Surely the 70 dop sticks I have are enough! Anyway, here are three I finally finished up this weekend. I have another 10 waiting for the last three wheels, another 15 in some stage on the first three wheels, and then the rest in various stages of preformed (edges sanded, edges not sanded, edges sanded and marked for bezel, etc.) Luckily my life is clearing up now that I might have time to actually play with rocks again! Ocean Jasper - this yellow gets pitty shortly after this cab, and I unfortunately cut past much of the orbs: Ocean Jasper - this is another chunk that I was lucky to get any good cabs from. The orbs in the upper left part of the cab get pitty shortly after this section as well. Luckily, I didn't pay much for either of these chunks! Finally, one of the few lapidary-grade material from Kansas - Dendritic Opal. Comes in this lovely white and the more common shades of yellow. I cut past the dendrites again, trying to smooth out my corners. They originally covered the left side and the bottom.

Great cabs and I know what you mean by a backlog. I have several waiting to be finished and I find myself cutting out more preforms.

For "getting pitty" these look really good. I really like the green pattern in that second one, and the triangle shapes look cool. I will have to try that shape on some of my material. Nice work.

I like very much all of them, but my favorite is the opal. Perfect shape and beautiful material.

Nice cabs Ronda. It's getting pretty hard to find the good old OJ, most of the stuff on ebay is the newer stuff with a lot of vugs and crap. And when you do find some nice pieces, they go for sky high prices. The dendritic opal is sweet!

I agree with the OJ being a problem, but they look great, I especially like the dendritic opal! Also know what you mean about a backlog!!! So many rocks so little time!

I was wondering where you been. Great cabs Ronda! I really like the opal. Ks has no rocks? If your backlog gets to be too much, you have my address. ;D Curt

I've cabbed some of the yellow dendritic opal and liked it. Never seen the white, I'll have to look since it is pretty stuff. Decent OJ is way out of my price league. Nice shapes on these.

OJ sure can be a tough material to work. You'll think you're OK, then the a bit deeper and the material starts to fall apart. I think my favorite is the Opal. I love the pure white.

Thanks, everyone! I'm itching to try more of the opal. I only snagged one chunk of the white when I was shopping, but it's definitely my favorite color combination. I've managed a couple cabs now from both of these OJ chunks, so I can't really complain. It takes more careful placement (and sometimes a bath in CA), but it's worked out well. Curt - Kansas has about 5 lapidary grade rocks, and all 4 of them are pretty impossible to find. The dendritic milk opal is found in one county, layered between the limestone. There's a green moss that is also only found in one county. There's flint nodules that were found when they were digging the missile silos in western Kansas - and my understanding is they were found toward the bottom of the silo. There are a lakers across the northeastern part of the state...but they aren't really plentiful. And then there's pet wood in the north central part of the state. The milk opal, green moss, and flint is basically gone without more extensive excavation on private land. The pet wood and lakers still turn up in fields after the spring plowing. Supposedly there's pet wood to be found along one of the rivers out by my sister's house. I'll be doing more research for this summer.
