Last week when I went to the Roseville show I took some photos of a display case of handmade knives. They were spectacular. Knives with Pierersite handles Other miscellaneous knives. Enjoy. Bob

WOW! Spectacular knives! I firstly thought are Jay Fisher knives but I think the logo on the blade is something different.

Those are so nice. Mel, how could you tell that was a damascus blade? Aren't the layers usually slightly different shades? Thanks for posting the pics, the pietersite handles are something else.

Jamie' In the second pic. the Bowie knife on the red velvet cloth, the light is just right and you can see the pattern in the steel where it has been folded and hammer welded. The pattern on most of the knives I have watched being made in the blacksmith shop where I work have been formed by hammer welding 5 pieces of flat steel together into one flat piece like stacking 5 cards one on the other. after the first welding on the anvil you take a chisel and (ALMOST ) cut thru the center of the blank while it is still yellow in color. You then fold and hammer weld these 2 pieces together and have a blank that now has 10 layers and so on. Each of the original 5 pieces of steel are different types of steel causing a shiny or dull appearance after polishing to a mirror finish and dipping in an acid bath momentarily. If you look close at the large Bowie you can make out a pattern on it that resembles that of an Agate ! If you take a large piece of steel cable and weld the ends solid you can then heat it and twist it so the cable strands open up then apply flux in there and then hammer weld the strands together and form a knife blank with it. After polish and the acid bath you get a pattern EXACTLY like snake skin. I get a real kick out of looking at knives a friend of mine makes, he has a Samurai he made by welding and folding the 5 blanks together repeatedly. It has been cut/ folded/ welded 9 times. That's 2500 layers. He also made a very fine blade from a fallen Meteorite. It has a snowflake pattern or frost on a window pane type look to it He has to trim some blades by sawing and even uses the small pieces to make little hunting knife ear rings. His name is James Miller, some collectors here may have heard of , or, seen his work ! There is a method of heating and twisting square bars together I believe, that creates a pattern exactly like a string of 4 leaf clovers ! Sorry about the rant, it is something that always fascinates me when I watch it being done

These are terrific!
I've been looking at Damascus blanks on ebay recently. There's one guy there that makes Damascus tomahawk heads that are just gorgeous.
