I found a Star Diamond Cabbing machine with 8 inch wheels. 4 wheels and 2 end buffing or polishing pads. The wheels are Diamond and was told in great condition. He also has extra Diamond and SC wheels to go with it. Is this a good unit? I can get it for $400-$500. I cant find any info on the unit. Thanks Keith

Keith, if it is diamond wheels, I would say it is worth it. Been a long time since I have seen a Star Diamond machine. I think they went out of business. Look in old issues of Lap. Journal or Rock and Gem or Rock and Minerals to see it advertised. It had the water come in the top thru valves and drip on the wheels. Had a drain hole in the bottom pan. Ken

Thanks Ken, I thought the wheels are almost worth the price. He also has a 5gal bucket of tigereye and some turquoise(?) and other rough he will let go with it. The pic that I saw of the machine did have the water holes in the top. I am going to check on it today. Keith

Yup Keith, sounds good to me also. I think I'd go for it, especially if it's $400.

Star Diamond went under in 1998 and was bought out by MK Diamond. The owner of MK sold t to his son who ran t as Barranca Diamond and merged bck ito MK a few years ago. The 8" unit is called a GP-8 and is a very heavy but great unit. The Diamond wheel model has two diamond wheels, two 8" x 3" expandos (with 4 diamond belt), diamond pas, leather pad, etc. Lst price $2995. Because of price and shipping costs (crated weight 230-240 lbs.) unit will be discontinued eventually. They have them on sale for $1600 to try to clear them out. The one thing to check on used units is the bottom steel sump. Make sure it isn't rusted out. I saw a used one last weekend with the original silicon carbide wheels, no motor or base board and drums and polish discs dried out and cracked sell for $200. Sounds like the one you are looking at is a good deal.

Kap: You got a very good deal, by the looks of the rock, and extras that came with it. I have an older GP-8, now with diamond wheels, and as you will find it is a good sturdy machine. Woody

Geez, I'm jealous! I saw a Star unit on Craig's list in Lebanon TN for 500, but it was all SC and didn't look too healthy. It came with nothing. There was a deal in Georgia, too and I missed out. It was a fantastic deal with hundreds of pounds of rough. It included a bucket of tigereye like yours. Did you get it in Georgia? It is still listed buy the seller but his computer crashed and he wasn't able to duiscontinue tghe listing. Happy cabbing.

It looks to me like you got an excellent deal! That rock alone has to be about the $400 you spent on the machine (Tigers eye alone is $6-8 per lb right now) It is going to take you a long time to work through that beautiful rough! Have fun! Fran
