Slabbed a piece of sowbelly that Dicky the Rockhunter sent me. The black specks are silver and it has amethyst streaks running through it. From the last chance mine in Crede, Colorado Ken

Is sowbelly similar to silver lace or calico lace "agate"? The one that's from the silver mines but not an agate?

Sow Belly is an amethyst lace agate. The Last Chance is one of the neatest places I've ever collected. Interestingly the Sow Belly was the "junk" they removed to get to the silver vein they were mining. It is beautiful material and harder than the silver lace.

Friends of mine went up and stayed in the cabins at the last chance and collected sow belly. It's on my list of must visit places in Colorado. I dunno if the guy is still opening up on weekends in the summer or not. Here is an interesting article I found of the Last Chance: www.cozine.com/archive/cc2006/01490471.htmlRick
