I am looking into going to Prineville with the family on the 27th. The night before we will be staying in John Day so might not make it in time to meet with the group that morning but would like to meet up that evening. Can you PM me your number also.

Woodyrock and I will be traveling down together. We plan on being there during the Prineville Pow Wow and most of the Madras Pow Wow. We'll look you up at the Prineville Pow Wow. We haven't figured out where we will be camping yet, but it will most likely be at a State Park near the Prineville Reservoir or the one on Ochoco Lake. This should be fun!

Awesome!!! Jasper Point SP is right down the hill from where we're staying on Prineville Res. The campground is first come first, first served; so you might want to try that one first. We're planning to rent boats the one day to access some agate Becky and I know of across the reservoir. Of course, Ochoco reservoir is nice too, the old Ochoco Rim Jasper/Bat Cave digs are up behind there...might be worth checking out.

Hello All, My wife and I will be with Dean and his wife. Sounds like we will meet up with you at Hampton Butte. I've never been there before. We will be staying at the KOA near Madras for that show. They have a sweet Polka Dot boulder in front of the store! Randy

Outta here first thing in the morning (Fri). Gonna go by way of Mcdermitt, then up to stay in Hines/Burns. We will be hotel-ing so won't see y'all at the campgrounds. But, like RandySparky said we'll see you out at Hampton the 29th. This is me: We'll be in a white Dodge Ram 3500 quad-cab.

Did the pow-wow on a day trip. No field trip, just buying some slabs. Also got a used Gryphon C-40 and an old 10" Beacon Star.
Will do a day at Madras next week

Well, we just got home after 10 days in Prineville. I had my truck loaded to capacity coming home and actually had to high grade out about 4 buckets of rough to get my load down to ~1500 pounds. I have over 200 pics and I'll post some tonight or tomorrow. It was a great trip and I'll post a report on how the digs were.

Here's my trip report/pics. I came home with over 1000 pounds of material. We stayed on the Prineville Reservoir in a rental with a great view. The place had it's own resident tame deer population. The place was on 15 acres and we found a bunch of agate and crystals. I found a 1 pound chunk of agate with pink plume showing that I'm going to face polish. Richardson's: They opened the plume bed up, pumped out the blue bed, and worked the moss bed with the cat for the Pow-wow field trips. We hit Pony butte, Moss bed and Red bed. RTH crew at work in the moss bed Red bed Walton Lake: We spent three days in the area working the Vistaite location, green jasper digs and Quant Tube beds. My brother, Jason, and I hit a very nice seam of green jasper with a nice yellow agate running through the middle of it. Tony found a huge boulder of white Ochoco agate. Becky and I worked a great pit at the tube beds, filling a bucket and a half of agate. My nephew, Road Cut, at the Vistaite area. Quant Tube beds Old Vistaite Digs [/img] [/img] [/img] [/img] Maury Mountain Mill Creek Thundereggs: This is a great location Gerry and Woody told me about. The eggs are highly fortified and resemble Botswana agate. Ochoco Rim: We spent two days here. The first day I hit two different seams of Rim jasper way up near the top of the rim. I hauled two buckets and a pack full down to the trucks. My brother found the upper bat cave and we scored some bat cave jasper. The upper cave has the thinner classic bat cave jasper with the cream/brown jasper on shale. In the afternoon we climbed down from the top and circled to the rim below the cave and hit the first Cave/rim jasper cave. This one has the cream/brown jasper on top of the red/green rim jasper. We found a lot of it. I worked as a pack mule. Becky and I went back two days later to the lower cave and the entrance was guarded by a rattler, so we collected in the tailings. View from the rim top. A huge hunk of Rim jasper still hooked to the mountain. It's in my garage now. Lower cave in rattler alley. Upper cave, can you spot it...you can see it from the reservoir below. Roadcut, after finding a big chunk of Bat Cave Bear Creek: We rented a boat to access the area. Becky found some of the prettiest moss agate I've seen from Oregon. I found some great nodules. The haul Rough Stuff I bought at the Pow-wow and from Judy Elkins. The highlights of the slabs were Rhodo, Vistaite, Willow creek and some high grade Bat Cave. I got the Bat Cave and Carey plume from Judy. We also hit Eagle Rock, but I didn't get any pics. We did find a half bucket of nice agate. I rolled a large boulder and worked on a seam on it's bottom.

WOW Dan: How beautiful it looks there!!!!!!!! I bet you had a blast and enjoyed being with the family! I like Roadcut! I bet he keeps you busy! Great stones!! I see the cabs hidden in that pile of rough already! Thanks for sharing, it is so interesting to see the places where this rock comes from. Are the shows always the week prior to July 4th? We might have to plan a trip out there next year. Amber

Are the shows always the week prior to July 4th? We might have to plan a trip out there next year. Amber The Madras Pow-wow is always the July 4th weekend. Prineville is the weekend before. The prices at the pow-wow's were a little high this year, but there were some hidden deals at some of the local, smaller dealers.

Here are a couple more photos from our trip to the Prineville/Madras PowWows: Woody with Stein's Pillar behind him. Woody wasn't too happy in this photo because he just discovered he had lost his wedding band somewhere in the piles of dirt we had been digging in. We went back a few days later and he found it in about the 8th shovel-full! Another shot of Stein's Pillar from Mill Creek Road. It is in the Ochoco Mountains east of Prineville, near the Mill Creek Wilderness. It is a 350-foot-tall rock spire and a popular spot for rock-climbing enthusiasts: Woody holding a really nice piece of Ochoco lace at Bill Quant's claim (you need to get permission from Bill to dig here): Some of Woody's Ochoco lace. You can't tell because of the mud, but there are some nice lacey pieces in the bag. It really helps to have a squirt bottle handy so you can see what you are finding. The good stuff is clear with white "ribbons" in it. Garry
