Howdy folks' Well since I had the bins out and open, I thought I'd take a bunch of pics. Besides, it's fun for me to wet the slabs and look at them again. This is pretty much a basic tour of all the Sierra Poppy Jasper digs I've cut slabs from, all within a couple of miles of our old ranch. Thanks for looking.....Mel
First off, the site I never found. I got a couple of hunks of this one, Webb Ranch Poppy Jasper from an old timer. None of my neighbors ever heard of this site but it's definitely from the Hornitos area.
These examples all came from the Holy Grail pit. All the varieties except the real red stuff are fairly heavily fractured. Please excuse the dust on some of these, it's blowing a typhoon today.
Jasper from the famed Stinky Horse Hole pit, so called because a neighboring ranch did us the great favor of dumping a dead horse in our hole which we had to smell for months while digging! That was not real pleasant but separates the men rockhounds from the boys. Was so funny seeing my buddy's dogs haul those old horse leg bons around and bury them in a different spot in our back fill each time we went out.
Vein type:
Nodule type, very much like the Sierra Primrose:
Got both of these from an old timer. They apparently came from the Stinky Horse Hole pit as we found a lot of tumble sized hunks there but the big stuff was thoroughly cleaned out. So sad! Nicest stuff I've seen from the area.
Blurry distorted poppy jasper with weird flow lines also comes from the Holy Grail pit:
This single example was found by my buddy and I cut it for him so I could get a couple of slabs. This came from another pit lower on the mountain and below the Holy Grail and my buddy dug halfway to China and found this one hunk.
These examples came from a series of tiny pits strung out along a hillside a mile or so from the main digs. Really had to low crawl through the manzanita to find these but worth the effort. Each iste was only a couple of yards square. First one is very like Sierra Primrose but some of the poppies are huge.
Firefly pit jasper; Lots of purple/ silver hematite in this type and it weighs like lead when you carry it out on your back.
Another orange type:
Here are a couple of examples of the wild brecciated jasper from the old Sierra Jasper pit. The third pic is sort of a hybrid of breccia with snowflakes of color. I have some fine poppy rough from this pit too in pink and just up the hill was some white and green poppy stuff. I've got some of that tumbling right now.
Slabs of Cosmos Jasper ( left) and Firefly Jasper ( right):
And finally, a couple of slabs from the Old Flora Claim. I always found it cool that a flowering jasper would be mined by a fellow named Flora.
