My mother-in-law really liked the ocean jasper that I posted pics of a while back. See: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=trtphoto&action=display&thread=29045So I'd like to make a batch for her for next X-mas. The Rock Shed has some for $12/lb. (expensive, I know!). This rock is getting increasingly hard to find, and everyone says that all of the old, good stuff is gone. Given that, can anyone recommend a source for OJ rough for tumbling? Thanks!

If you can afford the price, contact Terry Maple at the "The Maple Tree" on e-bay. He has a website also at www.maplestuff.comI was at his house one day, and he was collecting up some material for an upcoming show. The guy had a fabulous collection of rocks that he had put together to display. He tends to have some very nice material. I suspect that $12.00 is probably not a very high grade of ocean jasper, but I easily could be wrong. Mr. Maple is also very knowledgable. The guy has probably forgotten more about minerals than I will ever know!! A very nice guy as well. Good luck, Randy Houston

I ordered a 10 lb lot of ocean jasper from the Gem Shop for 6.80 a lb in their monthly specials. I know its not prime material but there are some nice pieces in the lot. Gerald

Check out this eBay auction. Brian, the seller, is a decent guy and his rock is always tops. It seems to me that his prices have gone up a little in the last year but I may be wrong. Still, he was recommended by another RTHer and I've purchased from him many times.

I talked with Brian a couple months ago. He told me about this stash of Ocean Jasper that was lunch boxed out of the mine in Madagascar when it was active and buried to hide it. I guess the mine owner ran the mine and workers with an iron fist. Now that the mine is mined out and all the OJ has been shipped these private stashes are becoming available. But at a premium price...
