I decided to clean out my 12in saw this morning it needed it bad. Put it back together filled it up and cut a couple of pieces of blue lace and saw a nice Laker sitting there looking at me. Put in in the vice checked it to make sure it was tight and turned it on. About 1/4 way thru the first cut I heard a loud CRASH shut it down and found my little Laker had decided it did not want to be cut and had came out taking a 2 month old blade with it. Well it least I wont have to clean it when my new blade gets here. Keith Here is a pic of my saw blade And the little monster that caused it But his days are numbered Keith

Kap, I've never used a slab saw. What happened exactly? Did the blade get stuck in the rock? Don't the saws have a clutch or a belt such that "something" gives before your blade is destroyed?

No the rock did not get stuck it came out of the vice that was holding it and when it did it flew to the side taking the blade with it. Keith

See what happens when you clean your oil? The oil gets too slick without the gritty stuff in the oil and it just pops out of the vise!!
I feel for ya, I have been there a time or two.

I have burned up two belts on my 16 inch saw in the last couple of weeks. I walked away from it outside and the rock came loose, but not completely out of the vise and stopped the blade, the motor kept turning and the belt burnt in too. I gotta quit trying to do something else when the saw is running. The second belt I burnt up was a Kevlar mix and boy did it stink. I had to shut everything down and leave the building for the day.

Wouldn't it be neat to devise a way of using one of those adjustable torque chucks like on adrill in the arbor for blade protection?

Bummer! I've had rocks slip and twist the blade, but so far nothing permanent or at least too bad. But you sure did a good job of cleaning your blade! Chuck

oh i hate when that happens. Ralph has doen't it twice and me once on the 16" saw. i try not to cut too round of rocks anymore lol There was a post about using a milk carton and plaster of paris to make a block so it fits snuggly in the saw. I will see if i can find it for you.

I was at Dale Bramlett's house and he uses small chunks of 2x4's and elmers glue and glues rocks to the 2x4's and uses that to keep the rocks from slipping. He even had one 2x4 about 6 inches long with about 12 lakers glued to it so he can slab 12 lakers with one pass. I asked him about some of them coming loose, he said once in a while they come loose, but not as often as they pop out of the vise when cutting them without a board. I have been thinking about trying that.
Just thought I would mention that as it is kind of headed that way......................Tony
