Howdy folks, Went out to take more pics yesterday. Wildflowers are really starting to pop here in the hill country now and all the critters are going nuts. Saw several big snakes but they were all to fast for me. The only reptile I captured was a totally new one for me, the Spotted Whiptail Lizard. The rest are just various pics. Thanks for looking ....Mel The Whiptail: These guys never hold still so I was lucky to get even this poor shot. Monarch on Texas Mealy Blue Sage: New baby here on the ranch, Joker the miniature horse. He's about the size of a beagle here and only a couple of days old. Bulldog, my old buddy and favorite mount: Typical field and fence row in the hill country and this is not a big wildflower year. Kinda crumby pics but you get the idea, lots o flowers! Couple of closer shots. You could shoot all day and never get everything but I only shot a few because it was breezy and the image stabilization on my lens is not that good:

Beautiful wildlife and meadow flowers. Now all you need is the bluebonnets to bloom and you are all set! Try not to burn up the next couple of days. Looks pretty hot there! Fran

Baz: Our place is between Kerrville and Fredericksburg so that's sort of south central Texas. The prettiest wildflowers right now seem to be in the Luckenbach. LLano, Mason areas but things are pretty nice all over the hill country right now.
Amber: Thanks for the compliment but I'm still finding my way around the new camera set up and I hope I can improve a little. I should use a tripod but am too lazy to lug it around with me. *L*. I love old Bulldog and Freddie, my other regular mount. Both are young, strong and sure footed which is necessary to haul my 6' 4", 235 pounds around this rough country. I never have gotten over the guilt I feel when I have an animal haul me around. Sometimes I think it should be me hauling Bulldog for a change *s*.....Mel

Great pics Mel. I love the lizard. So what kind of trees are do you have there in west Texas?. I'm assuming mesquite and osage orange, or bodark as its called there.

Tony *L* Man this part of Texas is famous for it's variety of trees and woody shrubs! Just on this ranch we have over 49 species including seven kinds of oak, walnut, willow, sycamore, pecan, ash, mesquite, monster bald cypress, cedar, redbud, Basswood, Bumelia, chinaberry, loqust, toothache tree, dogwood, mimosa elm black cherry, Retana, golden leadball tree boxelder etc. Haven't seen Osage but I'm assuming it's pretty common here in Texas. Not too much mesquite here because the ranch removes it and of course, lots more introduced stuff. The huge number of plant species is one reason why the biology is so interesting. Believe me, if we have a plant, we have about a zillion bugs to eat it *L*. Surprisingly though, thiis part of the hill country has few flies or mosquitoes which is nice after California....Mel

Well when I get back in to turning in the next few months I'll have to get on you to send me some wood. I've been working on a collection of turned spheres from different species of wood. I have about 125 made so far but have another 150 blanks waiting to go. I've traded with some guys in Texas before and have a few of the species you mentioned. There are 74,000 species of wood in the world so my collection is only a tiny fraction of that but its one of the biggest collections of turned wood I've ever heard of.
