I posted a few weeks ago that I was taking a silversmithing class. I'm 3 weeks in now, and loving every minute of it! Here's a little peek at what we've been learning: 1) First class was all about saw-work. We were giving a template (a VERY lopsided and uneven template!) to cut out of brass. It's very rough, as we didn't bother spending time to file and even them out. This is right off the saw: 2) 2nd class we learned how to do annealing and roller printing. Here are several pieces I did that night. a) piece of plastic ribbon with holes in it placed over the copper and put through the mill: b) a FEATHER put through the mill on top of a piece of copper: c) My favorite pattern - this was some cutout paper 3) 3rd class - we learned how to polish hammers, so we'd have good tools to work with when doing patterning. Have you ever seen a nicer hammer? This started out as a cheapie Home Depot hammer: And, then we started working on our sterling band rings. I liked the pattern placed into the copper with the cutout paper that I decided to do that on my band ring, as well. I've almost got my blank finished...it needs to be cut down more. It's 4.5 mm wide. We'll be working on soldering and shaping next class. And lastly, a bracelet I made recently: Thanks for looking! -Nichole

I think the pattern on that sliver band is going to look nice on a ring!!! The feathery thing is cool looking, I am glad you are enjoying the classes, I bet it is a blast to be with others who are into as well!! Amber

Amber I wish the feather-patterned copper hadn't tarnished so badly so you could see the pattern better. It's just beyond belief that a real feather can make such an impression in metal! I really love the feather, but the pattern isn't bold enough to work well on a ring. I'll have to make a pendant some day, though. It was really fun to see what everyone brought in to make patterns with. The class has been very fun...lots of wire wrappers in there.

Right now, the ideas for pieces rattling around in my head are greater than my skills. Hey, do you have a recommendation on a torch system? I'm debating whether it's really worth it to start with the small disposable bottles or just bite the bullet and get a bigger bottle setup. We use acetylene in class, but I think that's appropriate only for silver, right?

Save your money for silver and stones, that disposable bottle torch will make a lot of jewelry ,before you need to move up

O man, this rock hobby just keeps expanding. Honestly, I think it has to in order to keep up with the creativity. Those are great and I love the cutout paper patterns. That would make a really great bracelet also. Good work!

I'm jealous of the hammer maintenance lesson! The class I took covered the other things mentioned here, but didn't cover tool maintenance. Definitely looks like you're having fun!
