:-/Whilst walking on the beach at Balmerino (Fife), my son picked up what appeared to be a hand sized rock. We are completely puzzled by his find and have no idea what it is. The following are some points that might give somebody an idea of what he has found. 1. The object is approx 5"x 4" x4" 2. Object is black, smooth and when wet, very shiny 3. Object is not metallic as magnet will not stick to it. 4. Object cannot be scatched with a knife 5. Weight of object would compare to that of lead but is not soft as lead 6. Object appears to have been subject to high temperatures.
I personally believe that the object could be a meteorite but then I could be talking through a hole in my head. If anybody out there has an idea of what the object is, we would really like to hear from you
Thanks warrant1145

From what LITTLE I know about meteorites, it looks wrong. Meteorites should have striations, or scratches more or less aligned. This is created when molten material enters into the atmosphere.
What you have looks more pitted from gas bubbles in molten lava, or pitted from erosion of a softer material.
Maybe your lucky, maybe I'm wrong. For what it's worth.

I've been told that pieces which I have, similar description to yours, are Magnesite(? if I recall correctly). I agree that the photos of yours do not look right for a meteorite. One of the key points is the non-magnetic. From my short research that rules out meteorites most of the time.

I'd say it's a nice hunk of hematite. It should give a red scratch test on a white ceramic scratch plate. Since it's an iron ore, it would be quite heavy.....Mel

If you do not have a white ceramic scratch plate, you can use the back of your toilet bowl cover. Flip it over and scratch the stone on the inside part.

Greetings "warrant1145", my guess is that you have found the Basalt i told you about in your Identification thread, "Reply #3", also your 2nd photo is too blurred and should be deleted. Please do not PM me unless you consider the info is personal & private "For my eyes only" for example; your real contact details, instead just click "Reply" that way everyone can see the info you posted & have the chance to reply to your thread. Be aware that the RTH forums are world-wide & not just local to your own country, as most users are based in North America & have no idea where "Balmerino (Fife)" is; however "Balmerino, Fife, Scotland or UK" is more appropriate. Also before posting consider where it would be best suited to place your message or questions; based upon the contents of your message, for example; this thread would be better suited to the "General Rocks Board" or "Rock Identification Library" sub-forum. Finally read the forums Help (FAQs)! -- I hail from (The Barony of Seabegs) Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire, U.K, where aliens sometimes come for a visit & about 4 miles west from this monstrosity! Sticky's: Vendors worldwide, How to identify rocks & minerals!, FAQS: Add Tags:Save money on expensive grits & polishes!

Looks like he doesn't come around too much anyhow, 3 total posts and hasn't logged on since May 31. He probably won't even see this.

Warrant .... My Bad!!
I did not see your introduction (or maybe I was arguing with my vibe) and therefore I was remiss in welcoming you to the RTH group.
This is a great bunch of people and there is a whole lot of knowledge dripping from these walls.
Welcome and enjoy!!! Julie
