Does anyone have any thoughts on whether it is better to use Tripoli or 1000 AO as a pre-polish when tumbling softer materials in a rotary tumbler? Thanks.

I think 1000 AO works better on soft and hard and it is less expensive. My opinion.

I was goig to say the opposite. Alumina pre-polish is more expensive than Tripoli powder from my sources.

Tripoli is basicallly the same as rottenstone, isn't it? That is, weathered limestone. It's hard to undfderstand how that can polish anything. I've seen it used forlapidary purposes but I always thought of it as a metal or furniture rubbing compound.
