I was reading the thread about the weird lid failure and soon after I noticed the the center of a lid was soft on one of my 3 lb barrels. I started the tumble anyway but it was bugging me so after a couple days I grabbed some box tape and applied that to the lid. 2 days later when I checked on the tumbler there was a window in the lid, thankfully sealed by the 2 layers of tape I put on. I am unwilling to risk using this lid any longer but did I ever save myself a headache and messy cleanup. It was surprising how fast the lid went from soft to ventilated.

Sounds like you have the Thumler's Tumbler. That happens to mine quite often to where now I just check the center to feel for any kind of softness. I try to keep extra lids on hand because of that.

I run an A-R2 with twin 3lb barrels. After 6 months, I have chewed through my Stage 1 barrel. It's usually the coarse grit lid that goes first. The Stage 2 lid will be the next to go.
The lids are cheap. Have a few extras on hand and tape (or decal) the lids to reduce the leakage when the lid eventually fails.

Just placed my order for a few spares with the Rock Shed, I love that place... Gave me and excuse to throw a few other things in the cart, if I am paying for the shipping I might as well load up the box!

Wow .... this thread is interesting.
I have a Lortone 33B and I have only had one incident. The first time I used one of the barrels, I did not seat the lid right and it dislodged itself. What a mess!!
Now everytime I open a batch, I always check the rims for any grit sediment and always make sure to reseat the lid evenly before I add the metal lid.
I have never had to burp my barrels. I also always make sure to rinse off, a lot, all rocks before starting them in a batch. This way (something I learned here at the RTH) there is very little if any at all organic material. Apparently this is the source of gassy barrels.
The Lortone is a wonderful tumbler ... especially for people just starting out. Now ...
I think I'm gonna need a bigger barrel. ;D
As always Julie

Thanks for posting this info. I also have the AR2 Thumler. I will also be getting some extra lids!
