Here are the first cabs cut from the material I brought home from central Oregon this week. I'm proud to present 2 Bat Cave jasper cabs. This is definitely one of my favorite materials. The material is a pleasure to work and takes as good of a polish as I've seen. It is sometimes called Ochoco Rim Jasper and was mined in caves up in the cliffs above the Ochoco Reservoir in Prineville. I was lucky enough to score 125 pounds from a friend. I also cut a couple Vistaite cabs from a group of slabs I got from Judy Elkins. This stuff is also very hard and takes a great polish. Finally, I cut a rutilated quartz cab from a slab Amber sent me. I still need to polish up the back to finish it off. Bat Cave... Vistaite Rutile see you at the Pow-wows...

Dan: WOW, never saw or even heard of Bat Cave or Vistaite Those Bat Caves would be cool for Halloween, and that first Vistaite Cab looks like a perfect impressionist painting, beautiful cab! I am glad you tried the rutile! Twice the work but worth it! Great set as always! Amber

Dan, I've never seen a Bat Cave Cab done up...it's always been the rough I've seen. Those are pretty amazing cabs. They remind me somewhat of Bruneau. That Vistaite stuff is very rare isn't it?? That 2nd one looks like Earth. I love the Rutile best! Thanks for posting. Steve

Wow...you definitely should have posted a drool warning, HPD! As much as I love rutilated quartz, those bat cave pieces really do it for me. I've never seen that material before, and boy...it's incredible! The Vistalite is cool, too. I really like the 2nd one.

A lot of great cabs as usual in your posts, but that bat cave in the 3rd and 4th pic is a class above! Perfect pattern, perfect orientation of material and, as usual, perfect shine!

Glad you posted these. I needed my cab fix for today as two of mine broke on me while polishing. Love that rutilated quartz. The others are real cool. Nice cabs. Ken

I have never seen nor heard of Bat Cave or Vistaite so seeing something I have never seen before in the form of one of your cabs, is just such a treat.

Never even heard of bat cave or Ochoco rim jasper before. Beautiful stuff and your cabs are stunning as usual. Love the pattern and shape of the third.

Any of this material out there stil? Folks still come up with Rim jasper pieces now and then when hunting the slopes north of Ochoco Reservoir. The vistaite is all in old stockpiles and collections these days. The folks who've claimed to have found more vistaite have turned out to have dug Ochoco Green/Skaggs jasper (really nice stuff, but not the same). A few have triumphed with thumbnail size flakes. Elkins and Quant were real thorough when they dug up that ridge back in the 1960s and Judy Elkins was real sure they got every sizable piece between them (and they were taking even small chunks; anything that could be sawed).
