Dan, I've never seen a Bat Cave Cab done up...it's always been the rough I've seen. Those are pretty amazing cabs. They remind me somewhat of Bruneau. That Vistaite stuff is very rare isn't it?? That 2nd one looks like Earth. I love the Rutile best! Thanks for posting. Steve I was thinking it looked like Bruneau as well.

If you cab it top down, you get the effect shown in the OP. It's great for carving cameos.

Dome down on the layers and you get bull's eye patterns. Cut at a steep angle on the thicker pieces and you can sometimes get landscapes and orbs. At the bottom of the old-dig material (from the "bat cave") there was sometimes a lot of color, too. Some photos, just in case anyone wants to brave the rattlers and go hunting... opalite tophorizontal bedding layerscolorful old dig base rocklandscape pattern with orbs in the night sky - really liked the brushlike strokes in this piecemore of the old stuff cut vertically thru the bedded layering BTW, the term "Bat Cave" jasper seems to have been appropriated by various Asian cutters to move some of what we used to call "Feather agate" (some fossil critter death plate material)

Fine... just go ahead and make me drool. That is some beautiful material, especially that old dig chunk. I could get lost in that for a while. Wonder why I've never seen or heard of this stuff before. Thanks for sharing.

Wonder why I've never seen or heard of this stuff before. …and I didn't even have to go through my remaining vistaite for photos. That also comes in many combos of colors and patterns, though the texture is what sets it apart. A few pieces for which I have old photos… Would take days to go through and photo all the different colors and patterns. Can be translucent in some pieces - definitely not an agate, but unusual for a jasper (it is actually a rhyolite, where translucency is even more unusual). There was also the Van Deuzen jasper nodules from near the Rim/Bat Cave jasper. Other than a couple of museums and my own few pieces, I haven't seen anything more of that in ages. More colorful, but the same color palette as found the Rim jasper. I suspect you hadn't heard of these because the pioneer explorer-miners who dug them passed away long ago, and there wasn't all that much mined. If you weren't paying attention back around 1970 (and I wasn't), you'd have missed the splash they made in the lapidary world. No Internet forums back then. I had to play catch-up later on before their shops closed up, but nice to know some here remember those great old-time materials.

And in the 70s, not paying attention at this level. I moved to this country in '76 (age 9), and like most kids that age, I was interested in fossils and geodes. Lapidary didn't enter into the picture for another 32 years.

Just found a small pile of bat cave in an estate that I'm helping to prepare for sale. After it's priced I am going to try to get as much as I can. There's some very nice stuff there.

Wasn’t selling. Just asking who wanted some. Well, if you are GIVING it away... I'll take some. Otherwise stick around and let us get to know you before we part with our money. It's all in the link.
