I am planning a trip to the sunstone mines in Plush, OR at the end of this month. I have never been there and don't know exactly what to expect. Anyone have advice or tips for me? Thanks!

Karen,
Go to the mine websites.......they have lots of info about what to expect/what to bring/do's and donts. Just remember its wicked hot over there during the summer......take lots and LOTS of water with you.

Like Shannon said, take lots of water! Some portable shade would good too, the nearest tree is long way. A 1/4 inch sieve and a pan large enough to dunk the seive into water will recover a lot of stones that go unseen when dirty. More water. Sieve the dirt out before dunking in the water, will save water. Woody

Thanks for the tips! I'll be sure to check the websites and get a pan and seive. I'll post pictures when I'm back. It should be interesting. I am going with a group of about 40 people, students and fellow alumni of the International School of Gemology, along with our fearless school president.

What a trip! Glad to be home and out of the heat, but at the same time I wish I was still there. I didn't take many pictures, dragging around a camera can be a pain. But I will post some pictures of the mine and stones next week.

Your wish (or demand) is my command! I finally got around to taking pictures. first, here's a couple pictures of the Dust Devil mine, I didn't take my camera over to the Spectrum mine or to the Double Eagle claim. Okay, now for my finds. A tray full of sunstone, these are small stones, less than 4 cts. These stones are a bit larger, between 4 and 8 cts. All of these are more than 8 cts. Greens and Watermelons Reds Shiller Big shiller - this stone weighs over 66 cts. We had a great time, I am hoping to go back again at the end of August.

Oh I absolutely LOVE Sunstone. You scored big and it's not easy (due to its characteristics) to get the bigger chunks. Good for you and thanks for sharing these with us!
