For the last couple months one of my UV-10 was giving me fits and I finally figured out what was wrong and wanted to share. Symptom 1 - First the wingnut on the lid would not stay tight. I would check my tumblers every hour and find the top loose on that problem UV-10. Symptom 2 - The stones would jump around instead of rolling. I thought the weight was loose or something. Symptom 3 - When adding water and soap to get ready to clean it out the water would spray all over the place. The cause was that the bowl was worn so thin that the bowl would flex. This caused the wingnut to loosen because no matter how tight I got it the bowl would flex under the pressure. This flexing also caused the rocks to jump around and not roll and water to spray all over. The bowl was worn so thin light would show through. So it looks like UV-10 bowls are good for a couple years of pretty much 24x7x365 use. YMMV. Here's a pic of the bowl showing light... Rick

Just had that happen a couple of months ago on my own UV-10, Rick. Only took my original bowl 5 months for the nuts to rattle loose, the bowl to loosen and spin, stones jumping instead of rolling, spray, and then... crack! Luckily I had an extra bowl dedicated just for polish, so it became the everything bowl for a couple loads and am now waiting for my new extra bowl to arrive to be dedicated strictly for polish cycle only.
On a good note, the new extra bowls are thicker and heavier, so we should get a little more use out of them!
Thanks for posting this, Rick. Totally relevant for any vibe user and future ones too. Jo

I just bought a UV-10 and didn't anticipate that the bowls would wear out so quickly. At about $65 US shipped for a new bowl, this news comes as a little bit of a shock. When individuals said they have been running their UV-10 for years now, I guess I jumoped to the conclusion that they were running it continuously and they weren't cpnstantly replacing bowls.
Maybe a few UV-10 members can chime in on how many weeks, or months that a bowl will typically last.

My wingnut lost it's grip after six months and I came home to the dancing top. Replaced it with a brass one from Lowes. Quarter inch by the way. But now I'm having problems with black specks which I'm told are from the bowl. BobMac... just beach rocks

My UV-18 has a hex nut for the bowl, not a wing nut. I tighten down very securely and it's hard to imagine that the bowl would wear out like yours did, unless the nut was loose and the bowl was vibrating against the support. I haven't had any trouble with the wing nut on the lid, either. I've been running pretty much non-stop for 18 months or so.
My biggest problem has been getting dirt on the shaft so that the nuts are hard to remove or put on. I end up oiling it periodically.

I keep a cheap harbor freight wire brush by my vibes and clean the threads before I try to unscrew the bowl.
I converted my UV-10 to a 3/8" rod. The 3/8" rod has courser thread is easier to keep clean.
I get 3/8" threaded knobs at Woodcraft to hold my lids on. They have brass threads so I dunno how much life I'll get out of them. I tend to lose them in my shop mess but at $1.89 they easily replaced while I'm at Woodcraft buying super glue.
By UV-10 bowl wore out after about 2 years of pretty much 24x7x365 use. I never had the black speck issue. It just wore out from use...
