The Gem Society's big 18 in. saw uses Pella oil and I wouild like to change it over to mineral oil. How cleaned out of the pella would it have to be? Has anyone used mineral oil in a big saw and has in been ok? Any gumming?

I use it in my 16 inch and it works great. I have not had any gumming problems. Keith

Depends on viscosity. Mineral oils like Covington's rockhound oil are very thin, run almost like water, and work real well. I've tried some of the thicker mineral oils with really bad luck. Held too much grit and gummed things up real fast. Can't blame you for wanting to get rid of the Pella. That stuff cools well but man it's stinky stuff to work with.....Mel

I don't think you would have a problem if there is a little residual Pella left. Since you (or someone) is draining, it would be a good time to really clean and inspect for any needed maintenance/repairs.

Like Mel said, be sure to use a very thin mineral oil like veterinary grade. Been there and done that with the baby oil type. Don't go there.

Use technical grade mineral oil it's the same as the veterinarian oil just not processed in a clean environment. I know here in Idaho they use it to keep dust down on some of the dirt roads.

I use the Vet. grade in my saws because I can not find anywhere to buy the technical grade that will sell less than a 55 gallon drum. I am buying mine at Southern State feed and seed for $12.50 a gallon. I was getting it at tractor supply until they went up to $18.99 a gallon. Keith

Hey all, while we are on the subject of saw oil, when I cleaned my hp out several weeks ago,I stopped at O reillys and they had AW 46 fluid on sale for a shade under $30 for 5 gals. Has anyone used this and should I watch for any problems? So far seems fine. Sale runs until Aug 15, I believe.
Thanks, snuffy
