What have been your results when using CPP and AO? In my rotary tumblers I have good results using either one, but when I use AO in my vibe I get terrible results. I just got done with a batch of pet wood that started out in the rotary, then for 2, 3, and 4 stages it went to vibe. Didn't come out to well so I now placed them back in the vibe using M-5 polish. Hope it works. If not I'll just place them in the rotary and use the AO. Do you have good results using AO in vibes?

I use AO from the rockshed and have had great results in my Lot-o. A lot of my black pet wood does not turn out all that good, but it is a poor quality wood. Never used M5 on anything except softer stones when cabbing. I have never used CPP.

I've been told that the "tumble grade AO's will work great in rotaries and on some applications in vibes. Also on cab buffs wherever cerium will work (hard materials). For best results the finer AO's are recommended in vibes and will handle a wider range of materials. Some woods just don't want to cooperate. I've never used CPP but it is generally the low cost polish included in tumbling grit kits. It is my understanding it is for rotaries and the people that really swear by it use 3-4 tablespoons in a 3 lb. drum where 2-3 teaspoons of better polish will work fine. Not sure if that makes CPP the cheapest choice or not.

Condor. Ive used AO polish from the rockshed for the 6 months Ive had my Lot O. Ive had excellant results using it. About half the time Ill use 1000 ao after 500 before polish. All my stones run in coarse in the rotaries until 500 in the vibe, Ive eliminated the 120 fine stage, consider it wasted grit, except for the occasional load of large rocks in my 12 lb. tumbler.

My vibe is a minisonic and I've found AO works swell but I have to cut the amount of polish way down only to a teaspoon or less. too much and it doesn't seem to break down and get a suitable shine...Mel

I use the Rockshed's AO in my vibe, it's the only polish that I use. I do my polish runs for a week and they come out looking like new glass.

John: I'm not sure but it's small, maybe about a three or four pound hopper.....Mel

Mel,they made but discontinued a 2.2 lb, unit. The smallest now is a 4lb. with a "speed" control. The 2.2 lb KG-1 was a single uncontrolled speed. I have one and used it a lot but it beats up softer materials. I picked up a used MT10 with a 10 lb and 2 4 lb. hoppers last year and still have not had a chance to try it out.

I have mini-sonics. One has the 4lb hopper and the other is the 10lb hopper. It can also go with two 4lb hoppers. Must be the same kind John. Not sure how much polish to add. I just add what I think is good, but that doesn't seem to work a lot of the times.

The 10 lb. would be the same as mine except mine is the old green Geo-Sonics brand Diamond Pacific bought out. Mine had red rouge in all the drums so I'm assuming it was used for metal finishing so the drums are in good shape and since there is no motor age shouldn't matter. If Mel's is a 4 lb. unit you probably should try with one teaspoon and adjust accordingly to the 10 lb. unit (2.5 teaspoons). I mostly usemy little KG-1 2.2 lb. unit with Vibradry so I'm not much help.

i've been using CPP in my rotary tumblers pretty much exclusively for a few years. it's cheap and cheerful and gives a great shine.

I talk to a lot of people about polish at shows. I have people swear by CPP and hate CPP. Also same with most all polish choices. Most people find one that works for them and stick by it. I suspect a lot of the bad experiences are more the case of not enough preparation before polishing or not long enough in polish. Also, prepolish can never hurt and is a good idea on hard to polish materials.

I totally agree with John. I think most bad polish experiences are due to improper prep. I like a good long fine grind and a long prepolish. The stones are almost polished when they come out of prepolish and then, just about any polish will do a good job when you run it a couple of weeks with lots of pellets and mixed sized stones and let it break down even more.....Mel

I switched from CPP to Micro Alumina from Kingsley North. I couldn't find a reliable source for CPP in the quantities I needed. I'm thrilled with the results with the Micro Alumina and the price!

I've never used CPP, but do use AO in my Thumler's UV-18. When I've had problems with the vibe, it's because I've underloaded the bowl and the rocks are bumping up and down against each other, in addition to rotating. Guaranteed matte finish every time when that happens.
With Tom's (Connrock's) recipe, I often skip the polish after AO 1000 and Tripoli. But I've also used AO polish and Tin Oxide polish with fine results.
