I am now on the final polish for this first batch. For some reason the noise level is awful and the past two nights I have actually shut it off because I think even the dog is as much annoyed as I am. But, it is working great!! So ... I have to be even more patient if I am not tumbling it 24 hours versus 12 hours. Here is a little vignette to give you an idea of what I hear! Even with the door closed, It is loud. Is there such a thing as a quiet vibe? As always

AHHH!!! I see your problems ... the washer and dryer! With your machines on them, the washer and dryer are AMPLIFYING the noise! Just to illustrate my point, try setting your machines on the ground and turning them on. You'll see they'll be much quieter. If your floors are concrete, the noise will be less than if they're wood.
Get four cinder blocks, lay them side-by-side on the floor, with the blocks on top of a couple layers of carpet padding, then put your machines on those. That'll cut-down your noise BIG time!

My new vibe is a Covington 10.5" and, I think, exactly like yours. I have it sitting on a 1-ft square granite tile left over from my kitchen, which in turn sits on the table of my table saw, and the whole thing is strapped down with furniture straps in 2 directions so it can't walk away. And it is NOISY! I mean LLLOOOOOUUUUUDDDD! Tomorrow I plan to shut it down, clean and inspect the load that's in it (it's doing its first load ever), then restart it with a 1" thick sheet of packing foam under it to see if that helps. I doubt it will, though - I think the racket is solely because of the construction of the bowl.

It's also louder now because you don't have as much slurry to deaden the sound of the rocks (compared to earlier grinds). I agree that getting the vibe away from the washer and dryer, as well as putting some sound deadening material around will help.

Wow - I just cleaned my batch, then restarted with a Borax run. But first, I put a thick foam pad under the vibe - the kind of foam used for upholstery, etc. What a difference! Mucho quieter now.

I will try to find an alternative.
However, I do not have the space to be able to move everything around.
My laundry room is about 4-5 feet x 6 feet. Of that space, my washer and dryer take up about 2/3's.
And ... the little house that I live in was built in the 1920's. There is no insulation/sound proofing. I did put the vibe on the floor next the dryer this morning to see if that helps. It did not, at least not much.
One thing that is not an issue is the "walking" part. I really have had no problems since I started tumbling with that.
So for the time being, I will just have to deal and not complain. It could be worse, I could have no equipment.
As always Julie

;D I just had another epiphany! I cleaned the batch that was in my vibe in 500 grit, then put it all back in for a Borax run. After I turned it on, I looked to make sure everything was turning over, and noticed that the bowl was turning slightly, also! So off with the lid, and I cranked the nut down another 2 or 3 turns, then turned it back on - OOOOHHHHH! quiet!
Make sure you have the bowl nut really tight.

I thought about the bowl nut.
But .... mine is pretty tight. I cannot crank it any tighter or else I would crack the bowl.
I have just been dealing with it by running it all day and when I get ready to go to bed I shut it off.
So .... the 5 days suggested by Randy .... for me will be 10 days.
After this batch is done ... I will find a way to get it more quiet.
As always
