Cutting cab preforms on a Workforce had become a pain in the ass, even using a thin .025” blade. I didn’t think a lapidary trim saw would be that much of an improvement, so I got a Gryphon band saw from johnjsgems. Here’s the first cut, and call me happy camper!!! The band saw is quieter and smoother than the WF, and not a drop of water left the saw table. Before the cut, I figured on staying a hair off the line, but quickly said to hell with it and went for the line all the way around. You can see I got into the line a little on the bottom curve – easy to fix on the next one. Another plus is gonna be a lot less time spent grinding to the line (monotonous) on the 80 grit wheel, and the band saw cut is, if anything, smoother (less coarse) than what comes off the 80 grit. We’ll have to see how blade life turns out. I have no problem using a light touch, but for someone that kills a WF factory blade in a couple of days, I wouldn’t recommend this saw. I can’t see this fine little blade standing up to any abuse. Rich

Very nice - how long did it take in comparison to a WF or grinding on the 80 grit?
BTW - I love the pattern on that cab. Really striking!

Akansan - That cut took 10 minutes, and when I said I used a light touch, I mean feather-light!
There's virtually no chipping on the edges - less than an 80 grit or a 100 grit wheel. Front and back edges are clean to the eye and fingernail. Calling it microscopic might be a stretch, but it's certainly loupe-ascopic. ;D

Man Rich that is super cool! You'll save a ton of time on your preforms too because with a standard trim saw you have to cut way further from the edges which means a way longer time spent on grinding off the extra rock. What a handy tool!.....Mel

Didn't I just read you picked one up? Had a chance to try it yet?

WOW, that would be nice! I hate cutting most of all, and my trims are terrible! Might have to look at one of these! Although I doubt I could be that patient! Amber

I was wondering about those! I think that is an amazing cut for your first try. 10 minutes is not too bad since you don't want to stress the blade and think of all the time you are saving, not having to grind the sides so much! WOW! Fran

parfive. I was just looking at your link re your new saw. Do you ever use the rock that is cut off? Looks like it could be useful as trim for something—- part of a backplate.

Never used that piece for anything, Pat , but I just went down to the basement and found it in less than a minute. : ) Still in one piece too, ten years later! Usually, the offcuts just get tossed in the tumbler.

Your offcuts have given me an idea. I have core drills for circles; no more band saws. Thanks.
