I've been saving all the interesting bits from the bottom of tumbler for some time now. I'm wondering whether it would be neat to drill them for a necklace for my daughter. I have some 2mm sintered diamond drill bits from Inland for the task but I haven't tried them yet.
Has anybody ever tried anything like this before? If so perhaps you could post some pics and/or tips.

I know I have seen "how to" on here about drilling holes in pendants. I think a dremel was used and the person submersed the pendant in a small container of water that just barely covered the stone.
Wish I could add more info but I have never done that.

I'm not overly concerned about the drilling. I'm thinking more the practicality of having the stone chips perpendicular to the skin, the chip sizes, the weight, etc. Since I'm apparently breaking new ground here I'll just take a stab at it and let y'all know the results.

I've seen chip strands at shows that have bead people there. They are rounded so it don't look like it would be a problem. You could add spacers between the chips to keep the weight down

I too have seen strands of chips, they're so close together that they make a thick round band
I think it would be cool - specially if you could get the colors to wave from one to another

You could do it. It would be a labor of love for sure. My wife makes chip necklaces and bracelets, but she buys the chips from Fire Mountain Gems and restrings them, then sell them for around $5. I personally would drill a pendant for $5, not 8-10 chips/inch that my wife uses. The ones she uses are no more than 10 mm in height/diameter.

You could add spacers between the chips to keep the weight down Ken, at risk of sounding patronizing you are a freaking genius. That's such a great idea. If I did a solid band of chips it would definitely take away from the individual chips and I've only kept the interesting ones. I have a bunch of beads in my Scouting box that I'll never need now that my son is moving up to Webelos. I'll give that a shot. Wizard, that is very cool. Unfortunately it's kind of like I said "I've got some extra wood laying around" and you saying "I used my scraps to make a violin!" I don't think that I have the talent or vision to produce anything that artistic.

10Thumbs.. The gem tree was a fluke.. thou this was one of the last few things I was able to sit down and create.. but its got to the point where I am showing my wife how to pick up where I left off.. Because Ken sent me the dop sticks.. I'm in the process of creating a jig which will set the dop stick at a 45 degree angle.. with a grooved center to rest the dop stick in.. when holding or attaching the dop stick onto the piece of wood or whatever that is set at this 45 Degree, I can move the jig forward against the diamond blade attached to the dremel..

I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Does this relate to the chip necklace scheme somehow?

I think the necklace idea is cool. Maybe combining chips with a central cab? Also, are you going to tumble the chips first to make them a little more "skin friendly? If so, I think I'd drill before tumbling. Susan

If so, I think I'd drill before tumbling. Susan Susan, the chips are just tumbler refuse that I saved either because of their size or their look. Thanks for the suggestion on the cab. I'll have to try drilling a hole into the side of a cab. I've seen a tutorial on that here on the forum. I don't believe that there will be an opportunity for an edge of the hole to come in contact with the skin. The string should keep the hole perpendicular to the skin at least based on my mental model of how it will work.
