Two weeks before retiring, I felt an urge to rockhunt, had a week off, took daughter, and a rock friend to SD with me. Sure enough, it rained. It rained before I got there, and rained all but one of the days I was there. The rockhunting was definitely limited. Still had a grand time!!!!
Had heard about and saw these small quartz geodes, really pretty, that are found in the Bridal Veil Falls area, Spearfish Canyon.
Bridal Veil Falls
This is a new sign since last year--search and rescue does not want to haul your big butt out of here--I did some hunting anyway--NO LUCK
I did fnd a few little bubblegums--hard to walk around with the gumbo on your shoes!!!!!
These charactors were all over the Badlands, they looked to be in tough shape.
Did I mention the temps besides the rain? 48 to 54 degrees.
Frozen daughter. She packed a sundress and sandals----
A few prairie agates, I was picking up smaller pieces to tumble too.
The Grasslands people told us to go here to hunt--right by an underground missile silo. The site was not especially productive.
We drove Needles, Iron Mt, Norbeck, and Custer Park. You can't take rocks from there. I have no idea how they got in my truck----
A few more interesting things. It was not easy finding these in the gumbo!
The truck was so full of dirt, the speeding ticket said the truck color was 'brown'! Hah!!!! It's silver
Here's the traveling companions--Wall Drug. Two donuts and coffee every morning, and I was ready for the day!!!
A few more, nothng outstanding, that's for sure.
Good ol' Wall Drug----maybe sometime I'll tell you about the cowboy I met there
I have a favorite Grasslands area to hunt, no one else is ever there, and I always find neat stuff there. Cows were there the first day I went so I had to go back a second day. This came from that area while I was looking for rocks.
What is it? It is made of lead, it is written 'backwards', like maybe a stamp or print for paper? It says 'Cut Right Tobacco' Buy it now. Guaranteed. Any clues?
No matter what, the trip was great. We stayed at this $20 per night place, very neat and spotless. The owner befriended us, and we ended up with permission to hunt for fossils on private land. Due to the gumbo, once we got there we were too scared of going down to the river to do so, but we have the promise of a guide along with permission to hunt when we next go out there--pretty cool!!!! I'll be going again in the early fall, can't wait.
Thanks for looking at all the craziness.
