Just started up a batch in my new UV-10 for the first time. My impression? Wow, now that's some smooth rolling!! ;D I want to clarify something though - The instructions say to use 6 ounces of fine grit. (I'm using the 120/220) That would equal 12 tablespoonsful of grit! Can this be correct??? I even went online to verify that 1 tablespoonful = 1/2 ounce. With the TV-5 I was only supposed to use TWO TEASPOONSFUL. I had made the mistake of using two tablespoonsful & had slurry leaking out all over the place! Now granted this unit holds more capacity & therefore would require more grit than the TV5, but 18 times more??? As of now, I only added 4 tablespoonsful and some water sprays, & the rocks already look well-covered with grit. Oh, and I filled the bowl up well past that blue line on the outside too. Just want to avert any disasters ahead of time this time..... Thanks in advance for any advice, Erica

Good lord!! lol... 2 good heaping tablespoons should be plenty. Should be between 1 and 2 ounces. 4 tablespoons should be fine, just check it before you go to bed to ensure that the rocks still have that cyclonic action going. Quick question- does Shawn still send the little bag of candy? ;D

I suspect the manufacturers are trying to sell more grit.

I agree with Johnsgems
THEY are all trying to sell grit and suceeding !!
At that quantity of grit, the machine would gum up fast with all the rock mud created !!!
Don't forget these vibs are VERY aggressive especially in the 220 Grit stage
Have a good day
Keep at it you will succeed looking forward to the final outcome

Interesting article. Well, maybe the changing of auto body styles every year had one unintended consequence: the formation of a secondary market - classic cars, for those of us who appreciate and know better!
And now I can't get that "Plop, plop, fizz, fizz" jingle out of my head... AAahhh!

Okay, so you think you have it bad. I've been blindly following the instructions from The Rock Shed that say use 8 oz. in my UV-18. I guess I can cut that back... It sure creates a lot of mud, though. I'll have to do a trial run---I'm wondering if the grinding will actually improve with less grit. Hmmm. Now I'm thinking about the finer, more expensive grits that are supposed to be 4 oz... Chuck
