Looking Good!!
I have a friend at the local rock club who is in the competition as well.
She says that the rough you guys got initially is really not as good as it could be. But she says she is giving TLC to each and every rock.
I think you guys are doing awesome!

R'Trader, I think the package has to be post marked on Sept 15.
Julie, I agree with you friend on the rough but as long as all the entrants got the same thing it doesn't matter.
I'm not doing anything special with these rocks, just doing another load as I always do them. The only real difference between this load and any other load is all these stinking photo's! lol
Tell your friend I said Good Luck!

Man Connrock, those are looking good! That's amazing you had 25% reduction on your 7th round. Are you getting to the stage where you need to throw in some of your own rock to finish out those long winded ones?

N'S'rocks, I've been using white quartz as a "filler" to keep the load full.I have a lot of it and I guess it will be a by-product in this case. I was using Ohio flint as a filler but it was WAY to difficult to separate it for the competition rough to take the photo's.Then came th dawn!! Aha,,,,white quartz! lol

looks pretty shiny already...flawed rough and all...
Some rocks will never be perfect, pitting throughout is a problem without a solution.
Might as well be optimistic and assume your rough is better than the others!

Devil's Advocate: What's to keep someone from substituting in similar looking and already perfectly polished rocks in with the contest batch? Or using their super fine diamond wheels and paste rather than trying to tumble the rocks to perfection?

csroc,
The rocks are wet so that's why they seem to have a sheen to them. You absolutely right about some of the rocks we tumble having flaws of some sort that just are there and that's that.
I would have not even tried to tumble some of this rough but it's what I have been sent and that's that,,,,too! lol
I'll do the best I can and guess what,,,,yep that's that!!

Lookin' good! Do the rules prevent you from using a dremel to pre smooth an area? Susan

A lot of those look like they're really going to be nice!
I'm not at all surprised that they sent "B" grade for the contest, but for the money you paid I think "A" grade would have been appropriate. Do you get your rocks back after the contest?
It always seems like it's the prettiest rock that has pits running through it. I've seen rocks that have been coated with super glue to fill in the pits; doesn't look natural to me. Maybe if you could tumble off the coating it would look better, but I think you would just expose more pits.
I just move them on to the next stage...

Susan, The rules allow you to break, grind, sand, etc but only once after the first rough. I would normally have re-broke a few of the rocks as the process went along but in this case it a no no!
Chuck, Yeah I guess the rough could have been a bit better but we have what we have and that's that! You're right about the prettiest rocks being the runts of the litter with all the flaws!! I HATE rocks with ANYTHING on them but a GOOD tumbled polished shine,,,,,,,,,,,,,and that's that!! lol
Thanks guys and gals!
