Hi all, I've sort of been "forced into" rocks, as my kids (three 10yos) each got a DP mini-sonic and a pile of rocks this spring for their Bday. Their first batches were disappointing, so I hopped on here and have been learning so much from this board over the last month or so. At first I wasn't sure if it would be worth your time to sign on & ask a bunch of questions as I didn't know how long the kids' enthusiasm would last. Now their interest has faded, but mine is making up for it. I think they would be won back over by a good batch (I'm being much more selective between stages now, thanks to all your great tips), but if not, I'll be glad to babysit their tumblers for them... Thanks for this great board-- it's a privilege to be here, Carrie ps how do you guys add your avatars?

Welcome! We all started out with disappointing first batches, the first stage of the process (coarse grit) determines how the batch will look in the end. Avatars- I'd confuse myself trying to remember how I did that, but you must first have your pic or gif image (no more than 100x100) uploaded to a host sight. I use photobucket. You can find the place that you load it by clicking on "PROFILE" at the top of this page on then click on "MODIFY PROFILE" at the top of the window (in yellow).

Welcome to the board. I cant help you with the avatar as I dont know how myself. Did I read it right that you have 3 ten year olds(triplets?) or ages 3 to 10, just curious. You will get all the help you need on here.

Thanks for the tip Randy-- I'll soon see if I linked it up right or not...
That was not a typo Snuffy-- around here they are called "the triplets." (The 2 boys we actually adopted from Ukraine-- they are the same age as our bio daughter-- a funny story really, but probably for a different website...)
Carrie
aargh! Sorry-- I don't know how to add a photo either! (Who can help the retarded newbie?)

Ahhhh, well... If you are using Photobucket, look for the "IMG Code" box under the photo you have uploaded. Click in the IMG Code box to highlight. Do a ctrl+c to copy, or right-click and select copy (or however you normally use the copy command). Then paste in your thread. Notice that the html code (IMG) and (/IMG) are before and after that line you pasted (except in brackets instead of parenthesis- cannot show it here or it will now show up).
If you are using another photo upload program, you can use the direct link for that pic, but will need to have the IMG and /IMG in brackets around it.
Hope this helps, now try it out!

Thanks for the help Jo, and the kind words Julie-- we do often get mistaken for good people because we've adopted, but the truth is that we have been really blessed as parents....
Your comment about the botched batches is scary though! Was hoping the process would get easier very soon...any tips you'd like to pass on? (Assuming your rocks are turning out great now)

There is a knack to tumbling, but I can assure you that the more batches you tumble, the better you will get at it. All of the tips and reading in the world won't replace first hand experience, but they will sure point you in the right direction. Everything that I do with rocks I learned right here. One more thing- not all rocks will polish. Get a couple pounds of agate tumbling rough, they take time to tumble but will guarantee a batch that has "the wet look" once polished.
