Hey, you being a wizard and all I just want to know ...
... Did you actually do all this???
Reason I ask is there seems to be nothing of a personality in the writing. It all reads (and it's only my opinion) third person singular.
Almost as if you found a report elsewhere, and just cropped and cut and paste it to suit.
Hey, just askin' ...

Thanks for the report, it serves to balance out the TV show madness.
Unless you arrive with a fat wallet and very, very low expectations, one will most often find that the big pay to play operations are nothing but tourist traps. And the stuff is mostly salted, the "gems" are from Brazil or India, which makes it a lot like fishing in a stocked trout pond... fine if you enjoy that sort of thing but there's better entertainment to be had elsewhere.
We've all been there and done that, but don't worry, keep up the research and you'll find some good local collecting, it just takes time and a lot of effort and driving.

My wife and I went there several years back and it was a total rip off for us. Even the creek was " enriched". We got the day pass to dig and pretty much everywhere that looked good to dig was roped or taped off. We each got a bucket of dirt with our passes. We each got exactly the same materials right down to the exact number...... !! As we were leaving I found a chunk of quartz in the parking area better than anything we got at the mine. As we went up the drive way out to the main road we met a truck pulling a flatbed trailer stacked full of "gem" buckets. Even the dirt did not come from there..... a money hussele for us. We did have a great tour of a museum in town. They had some beautiful mineral specimens of hiddenite and red rutile crystals. The main attraction for the museum was the modern necessities of a late 1800's mansion.
