Ok, so many wanted to see what we got at the lapidary auction in May, but with the bum knee, graduation, moving, the kids, new job duties, etc nothing happened! LOL. Finally we had a weekend alone to focus on rocks, so this will be very pic heavy! Here is the box of amethyst and fireagates. The white lid is to a 5 gallon drum, so you can gauge how big the points are, the color is so dark and rich, I think I paid $15 for the amethyst and $18 for the shoebox of fire agates, maybe 5 pounds each. Now the slab box, I didnt even see what was in here, except for a slab of something really green, oh man what a surprise this was, the whole box for $17, some of the slabs are marked $20 each. Deschutes, Willow Creek, Sodilite, Biggs, Jade, etc Condor or Laguna? An incredible plume and deschuttes Next was a little tray of specimens, some coral, sulpher, oolite, turquoise, galena, pyrite, wood, etc, $11 Horn Comb- don't know what it is or if you can cab it? These are some of the rocks that are too big for the WF, I need someone with a big saw to take these on!!! Each piece is probably over 5 pounds. Llahnite, some IDONTKNOWITES and Azurite in Malachite, he had the recipt attached to this, he bought it in CA in 1953 for $50, I am thinking this is really good stuff! Next up I paid $8 for 5 plus pounds of old Stock Lagunas, man this was the deal of the day, these are so beautiful once cut! THe pic of the insides totally didn't turn out, but here they are uncut. Some laguna slices Ok Photo bucket is killing me, better make a new thread before I lose all this! Amber

Wow what a score! Great looking material! Ar you sure it said horn comb instead of hornstone. Those strips look like knapping blanks and hornstone, a type of flint, is a popular knapping material. Should polish real well as a cab or tumble.....Mel

Cool, cool, cool rocks!
That pictural in the center of the tray - 3rd pic is an eye-catcher. Could that "Horn comb" be some pet wood? The red in those Lagunas is a killer!

Mel it is probably what you said it is, it feels soft! I will have to see if one of you knappers wants this! I will never use it! I will send them to whomever wants them, so let me know!

Horn comb, I've used that before, but it had nothing to do with stones or rocks. If I reme mber rightly, it's actually made from the horn of cows/bulls/cattle and other such animals. Because it is similar to what we would call finger nails, it can be steam treated and flattened then cut to shaped, as it dries out again it goes hard. You must have seen real horn combs and such. Well if memory serves me correctly, it was in the past used for inlaying in wood, similar I'd say to that instaria? Is that the correct spelling, anyway, in relation to using it as an inlay in would, perhaps Tony could either confirm or correct. Thanks for your time John I can actually confirm this myself, please see items linked accordingly.www.alibaba.com/product-free/217090987/Hollows_Transparent_Natural_Horn_Plate_Atk/showimage.html

That is the stuff, there were only these 2 pieces in a bag that smelled moldy so I threw it out! It said something about soaking it prior to use to make it more pliable. It is pretty stuff, just a random thing thrown in the pile, so that was all there was of it.

Awesome score! You did really well. The slab of Picture Jasper is actually old Blue Biggs and a real dandy. I see an awesome scene in it and it's definitely worth more than you paid for the whole slab box. The Laguna's are great. Dan
