... This is a really amazing piece of black stone I have here. Initially I thought it was a piece of Black Sheen Obsidian, so I just dumped this in the tub of polished Black Sheens. It was more than obvious that it most certainly wasn't BSO. It has the most amazing (well in my opinion) deep black colour and the shine just goes deeper and deeper. Does anyone have an idea of what this could be, or give me a few pointers for me to further investigate. Thanks in advance.

Could it be Jet (Gagate) ? Mr. John - Yorkshire Jack could ID it if it is what I think.

Ive got some Jet......its really shiny before you do anything with it, and very light weight. Im not sure if it would tumble right. Was it similar to that prior to tumbling?
It took a super shine.....like an agate. I had some black agate slabs at one point. I have some basanite that is black. I use it for the backs of doublets but Im not sure if it would shine like that since I dont polish the backs the same as the fronts.
Just trying to throw out a few ideas.

Adrian Thanks for the suggestion Adrian, it's been suggested by other means that it could be Jet, but it definately isn't. I live on the Jet depositing coastline, about 40 miles from the most Famous Jet producing area and have found several pieces in the past. This is far much harder than jet. I'm still in the dark but it's a fantastic stone now the less.

Okay ... I am gonna take a crack at this ...
Way!!!!!!! before I came here ... I heard someone speak of a stone that is very rare ......... your picture and description sound very similar.
I was told it is called a Blood Obsidian .... it is so dark and yet not completely black. And yet ... when wet .... it appears to be black with very subtle dark, dark, red hues.
I am probably way off base!
