I'm sorry I missed 1 set of photo's but things here were a bit hectic to say the least!
Anyway,,,,
What I did was take all of the comp rocks and ran them once in the vibe using 120/220 grit.
I did this to see if I could smooth out some of the minor bad areas of some of the rocks and it worked fairly well.
After culling the rocks that are ready for a 220 run I put the non-keepers back into the vibe using 60/90 to see if I can further remove some of the very bad areas that the rotary either would never get out or take eons to do.
The photo's here are after a run in the 120/220 for about 24 hrs.
As you can see in the 2nd photo most of the rocks that have bad areas are the bigger rocks. This is the norm for the big guys especially if the rough isn't AAAA.
In this photo I've marked out several of the problem areas that will probably never tumble out.
This is where one has to make a decision.Should I keep roughing this rock or should I just keep it going along with the good ones?
In my opinion there is NO going ahead with a rock such as this.It should be re-broken and back into the rough.
(i can't do that here because of the competition rules)
The reason I say break it up again is that this rocks can only cause problems down the road with cross contamination and if the rock does make it through the polish run what will I have?
A polished rock full of pits and cracks that (in most cases) will be full of grit/polish making it look TERRIBLE!!!
Time and time again I see this on this board especially with newbies. We ,who have been tumbling for a while know EXACTLY how difficult the first tumble is and how proud we are when we make it allllllllllllllllll the way through the polish stage.
I keep my mouth shut when I see praise being given to loads such as this because I DO NOT think this should be encouraged and DO NOT want to upset anyone,(which has happened in the past).
I am V E R Y tough teacher and WILL NOT accept "good enough" from a student and mostly myself.
So,,,,,take these lousy looking rocks out of the load ASAP and re-break them or toss them in your favorite creek!
I know I've strayed a bit from the comp rock post but I think it's necessary in order for me to make my point on what to do with a rock such as the one in the above photo.
Comments and questions are A L W A Y S WELCOME!!
