Bought a 5-gallon bucket of rocks for $6 yesterday at a yard sale. Got some pretty cool stuff, I think. Seems to be a lot of wood, but also a fossil, a piece of obsidian, a couple agates with crystalsThere is a bunch more than is pictured, but here are a few. Seems I have several pieces of petrified wood (opalized wood?) the 2 prettiest pieces are small (the bigger one here is about the size of a tennis ball) different side More wood I thought these were limb casts, and maybe they are?? But the inside of them looks very plain, like solid or faintly banded agate. I was expecting to see something that looked more like wood? i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss114/anidaholady/ROCKSYARDSALEJULY2009023.jpg[/IMG]This stuff, on the cut side, looks exactly like the panneling inside my mobile home in 1974! But the outside does not look like wood. I don't know, looks more like ?rhyolite? More stuff that looks like wood on the outside but ? inside? And maybe this is poop? Also a piece that I posted in the fossils section, and was identified for me by John and Brian (Thanks again!) as turitella agate Thanks for looking! Barb

Nothing at our local yard sales except for old shoes, the rocks must be a west coast thing. Cool stuff, awesome price!

I don't know if it's a west coast thing...I don't find them very often! This time there was a bucket of rocks sitting out in front of the garage and I asked if they were for sale. The guy said he found them in his dad's basement, had no idea where or why dad got them. I don't think he had any idea how much he should charge, but since I showed him I only had $6.00 in my billfold, and I think he wanted to get rid of the rocks, I became the new owner :-) Barb

Barb: Those are limb casts...........they are a form of agatized wood, where the outside is a perfect cast, whereas the inside is plain agate. The agate may be pink, green, yellow, blue, or othet colour. Woody

Thanks Woody - that was really puzzling to me, the outside looked too much like wood to NOT be wood, but since I haven't seen any limb casts before, I was really confused about the agate inside. One of them even has a bit of faint banding :-) Barb
