I'm about 1 day behind with my posts of these rocks so PLEASE bear with me. When I took the rocks out of my last rough in the rotary I thought some would "clean up" using 120/220 in the vibe but they didn't.I then ran the problem rocks once in the vibe using 60/90. After the 60/90 run I've decided that this is as good as the problem rocks will ever get so I put all of the comp rocks in graded 220 and they will come out some time today.I will try to post those photo's tomorrow. Another thing is that I messed up by not weighing the bad rocks before the 60/90 run so if anyone is keep track of a weight loss I'm sorry. The weight you see in the following photo is of the bad rocks after the 60/90 run in the vibe.Maybe there's a "math head" out there who can figure out the correct weights??? lol connrock

Hey Connrock, I was thinking, if you can't mess with these mechanically... would it be of benefit to try to do it with your filler rock? I mean, maybe run these amongst tiny little guys that can really get in the pits and work them out? I know you use all sizes for your filler, including tiny stuff, but can you think of a way to utilize that filler rock to smooth these problem rocks out? Just trying to think creatively... I know you probably have tried all the options. Jo

I'd echo naturenut's advice. Whenever I have larger stones with indentations or additional roughness, I run them with a whole bunch of baby lakers in the 1/4 inch range. The littleuns get in all the indentations and work out the hollows real smooth. Then I continue to use these tinies through the rest of the steps and it seems the additional surface to surface contact improves the contouring and polishing in the later stages too.....Mel

Well I'm still way behind. I'm not going to get the load changed but that won't hurt anything. The grit will just break down,,,,,, N'nut + mel, I started this load with under 4lbs of comp rough which wasn't enough to fill a 6lb Lortone barrel so I have been adding white quartz to it all the way through the process. Right now I have MUCH less in both volume and weight to work with and my vibe needs about 3.5-4.5lbs to work properly. Again I have white quartz in with it and the biggest pieces of quartz are about the size of a grape and the smallest are about the size of 1/2 the eraser on a pencil. There's no doubt in my mind that "some" of the bad pieces can be tumbled out but by the time they are good enough to continue the process they will be smaller then the quartz! lol Here are 2 photo's of the same rock. The 1st photo was taken after about 2 roughs. The 2nd photo was taken after 10 roughs. How many more roughs do you think it will take to get this rock good enough to continue without breaking it? How big do you think "that" rock would be?lol (sorry about the fuzzy photo.i just cropped it out of another i had) connrock

Hmmmm....
Maybe if you left the Dremel out, plugged in... conveniently loaded with a diamond burr... and walked out and forgot to take Homer with you and Homer was all alone in the shop... maybe those pits would magically smooth out on their own, right?
It could happen...

Knowing Homer he would more likely eat the Dremel and the rock!! connrock

Well ... as long as the rock comes out smoother in the end... ;D

Yep, that one is never going to get there without cheating. It's filler for the other rocks.
The rest of the problem rocks don't look nearly as bad, or is it just the way they look in the photo?
Keep up the good work!

N'nut, The rocks had better be smooth if they come out in the "end"! lol
HRC, The rest of the rocks are looking pretty good but still need some TLC. connrock
