Hubby and I are looking for somewhere to go for our anniversary where we can dig rocks for a couple of days at the beginning of October. I'm hoping I can get some ideas from folks who may have been to some of the good digging locales.
We have no camping equipment, so any place that doesn't have lodging nearby is out. We figure we'll need to rent a 4x4 vehicle pretty much anywhere we go.
Idea thus far: Woodward ranch
Anyone else have any suggestions?

I've always wanted to go on a beryl dig up in Maine. There is a guide service that can get you into mines and quarries that are closed to the casual collector. If you want info on it let me know and I'll dig out what I have.

Tony, is that through the folks at Poland Mining Camp? That's on my list of things to do one day, but their season ends Sept 30th...right before our vacation, unfortunately.

Woodward is a blast and you can collect some nice material on the hill above the ranch (walking distance).

Nichole: Glad to see you, have not seen you around much! Missing you! What about all the gem places in NC? I really want to go there, plus that time of year it would be beautiful weather hopefully, pretty foliage, nice drive? ? We still gotta get together in NJ, and a trip up to Boston is still in the works, if I don't soon meet Lori she is going to clobber me! Take care sweetie! Amber

Nichole, go over to the dirtyrockhounds board. There are digs posted almost every week in the NC, SC, GA region. We are in Asheville, NC right now for the week. Lots of places to dig here. www.dirtyrockhounds.proboards.comKen

Work has blocked all photo sharing services, so I can't ever see anyone's photos. I come and check the place out every day, but there's not much I can say now since I can't see anything but posts. We went to NC for our honeymoon. It WAS a blast. The blue ridge highway is an absolutely gorgeous drive. We really had a fun time there. Definitely let me know if a trip to the boston area is going to happen. I'm in!

If you're planning to fly and rent a 4x4, I would recommend flying into Portland and heading down to Madras/Prineville. Hit Richardson's, the Ochoco Rim for Bat Cave/Rim Jasper or one of the other dozens of prime collecting sites. Dan

Nicole, yes that's the one I was talking about. I didn't realize their season ended so early.
