Exactly 8 days and $250 later, the Lot O blew! Sean at the Rock Shed said he was having trouble with some of the motors going, but I took a chance, should have known better! So am off to email him for resolution! I am so bummed, I really wanted to get this first batch completed for the trip, and Tom has been so helpful walking me through the stages, now a big ON HOLD! I am so bummed I loved that little machine! The darn motor was so hot that it may have melted the bowl a little, so I think I will have to get that replaced as well! Always something with this hobby! This morning it was great, checked it and rechanged the grit before work, got home, thought jeez that is funny I dont hear anything, and when I got to it, it was humming and hot! Glad it didn't start some sort of electrical fire! Amber

Sorry to hear that, Amber - I'm starting to enjoy my vibe also, altho it's not a Lot-O, and it makes one hek of a racket, it reminds me of Timex - takes a lickin and keeps on tickin!
Couple of nights back, I let it run all night with 500 AO - checked before I went to bed, looked really wet, so I let it run. Next morning, went to check it, and it sounded funny. It was running and making noise, but the rocks were NOT moving! I dumped about a cup of water in it, and the rocks took off like they were on steroids. It's weird, if you ask me!

wow that sucks! glad you didn't have a fire...it can always be worse, right?
any idea on what made the motor fail? I wonder if it has the same motor as my old Lot-O....I've never had any problems with it and it's been around a long time....

Tkruger3 Tom, You have to watch vibes and check them regulary especialy if its hot and dry,
These machines are VERY aggressive and soon gum up with mud from the rock,
I Find the secret is to check regularly especially in the 2 (220) grit stage , Try and keep them looking glossy once they go a dull grey ADD a little water , to get them looking glossy again and mobile
Have fun

I feel soooooooooooooo sorry for you kiddo!
I know EXACTLY how excited you are about the vibe and BAM,,,,out of commission.
I guess the motor thing all reverts back to money I've been hearing about motor burn outs on the LOT and it makes me angry.Bell makes a FANTASTIC little unit and they probably had to change motor vendors to stay in the "black".
I,like mikes have had no problems with my old units and they have been running for over 12 years,,,,,almost constantly too!!
The only problem I EVER had was one of the frames cracked due to metal fatigue from continuous vibration.(like bending a wire over and over again until it breaks)
I sent the unit back to Bell and they replaced it free of charge as the frame is guaranteed for life.
I know you're down over this but I'm sure you'll be back and running soon.
It is a bummer though that you can't finish this load before your trip!
We'll getcha cookin again!!

I know, it is so sad!! When I contacted Sean about purchasing the unit, he said 8 of 12 of the last ones he sold had bad motors, but I was hell bent on getting this since it was quick! You know me, never one to wait around, I was sure I would be fine! Ugh so disheartening! Sean is super and I am sure he will hook me up with all the info to get it replaced! It just sucks! It does make me a little nervous about letting them run all the time now. I agree I could always tell if the rocks were not wet properly just by the sound, but they looked super and were moving around like lightening yesterday! My son and Gram are here and it made me so sick to think if a fire would have started!

Thanks for the notice Curt. lol I know all about it. Like Tom said they probably changed vendors to save a buck. My question is what's more costly, a few bucks more for a good motor or replacing 2/3's of the ones you use. I was actually thinking of saving up for one of these puppies since it impressed me so much. Have to rethink that now that they are putting in garbage motors. I know how upset Amber is about this. Don't know if they will replace the unit or just the motor but I'll do it for her either way.

Bummer Amber. Hopefully you get some manufacturer satisfaction. Thankfully it didn't catch fire.

Dang Amber, that sucks!! One of the unfortunate things about this hobby is the relative amateurish nature of most the machinery. Been doing this forty years and my shop used to look the the graveyard of dead lapidary machines, saws etc. For mechanisms meant for the hard continuous work of sawing rocks etc. I've seen some of the crappiest underpowered motors, cheapo soft bearings, crumby belts etc. And, over the years the problems have actually seemed to get worse not better ( maybe more foreign parts etc I don't know). Shoot, half the machines you buy have to be rebuilt right out of the box now. Lortone seems especially bad this way. Anyway, I feel for ya. I have a box of motors from the Rockshed right now waiting for the time I feel like putting new motors on all my burnt out Lortone tumblers. I've even taken to running way lighter loads than I used to simply because the darn motors on my rotarys won't turn a full load like they're supposed too. And my Minisonic vibe, geez, that friggin thing sounds like a cat trying to give birth to a baby rhino. Unbelievably noisy rattley sumbitch!.....Mel

I know how you feel Amber. My LOT-O joined the club apparently.I got it last December and 4 months later it started giving problems. I would have to turn the wheels by hand to get it started. I also set up a small fan to blow on the motor. It has limped along, has been working most of the time, however tonight I think it has bit the dust, runs for afew minutes and thats it.

Snuffy: Shawn sent me the address and said to say I bought it at the Rock Shed, I have my receipt, if you need the address let me know! It should still be under warranty if it is only 4 months old! I would try to get it replaced for free, these units are expensive. I have the worst luck in the world, why I thought this would be OK is beyond me! LOL
THanks everyone! Amber

Amber, I called Shawn about the problem and he told me he would try his best to try to get another motor. The motor had a 90 day warranty and I was a month over that. If he coulda,he woulda. I guess I will buy another motor for it, got two barrels so Idont want to toss it.
