Here's what's starting to come out of the "doo-doo" batch now-- I just had to leave them alone for a while...(which is what most of you have been saying so THANKS!) This photo doesn't really show the shine; maybe I should have waited until the sun was higher in the sky? I can see why so many of you like to have a saw or wheel nearby... also a rotary for the first roughs-- lots of stubborn grooves & pits. Don't pity these rocks though-- 3 little pirates have already claimed them for their treasure hoard and they are bound for an exciting future. My perfect batch will have to come later...sigh... Fare ye well me hearties, argh, avast, ahoy, etc. Carrie & kids pirates

I can tell they are shinning up! What a variety you have there and so pretty too! You can't call it doo-doo now! Fran

If this stuff qualified as doo-doo at one point than I think you made a heck of a nice recovery. Trying to capture the shine while the rocks are in a bowl is going to be tough. Try to lay your stuff flat rather than on a concave surface. That should make it easier to get a good shot. Looks like your batch went from doo-doo to woo-hoo!! LOL!

Thanks MNH, fran, & GV! Randy, I can't take credit for the selection, as these were slab scraps from a repo :-) Connrock, mine will *never* shine like yours! (even if I could keep them away from the "pirates" LOL ) 10T's, thanks for the lighting tip! I will try that with the next batch (river rocks coming through). Carrie

Carrie, Try photoing with the sun on your back and see the results This is a common problem we all face with digital
With Digital cameras you get a lot of glare comming back which causes a problem

That is a good photo tip Jack. I always try to get my light source as close to my shot angle as possible... without casting a shadow in the field of view that is. :nono: Anyone with a camera that has a threaded filter ring or barrel adaptor should consider getting a polarizing filter, which also helps cut the glare. It's nice to see so many new people also benefitting from the wide range of advice and experience here on RTH though. Some of the first batches i've seen lately really raise the bar for beginners!

LCARS, I was thinking exactly the same as you about the newbies having such good results with their first attempt at tumbling.
I'd hate to say how many pounds of grit I went through before I got anything like they are right now!Actually, things got sooooooooooooooo frustrating for me I almost packed it in!
To see these people getting such great results only proves again that this web group is doing very well!
CONGRATS NEWBIES!!!
