I have gotten a little tired of cutting cabs , so I decided to get back into a carving. This is made of Happy Camp "Jade" (Idocrase). It is 2 1/4" across. Bob

Wow Bob, that's awesome. Can you give us some tips for carving stone, please?

I love the subtle details you added to that - the slight curves that highlight the dolphin shape more than the standard cut. Love it!

fishenman, Here are the basic steps that I used to carve the dolphin. 1. I drew the shape on the slab and trimmed all that was possible to do with my trim saw. I notched in those areas that I could reach with the saw. 2. Using my Fordom flex shaft unit I ground the excess away and rounded the shape with Mizzy wheels. They are 1" diameter S/C wheels that are used dry. As I ground I routinely felt of the piece to be sure that I wasn't overheating it. 3. Using 1/2" diameter slices of a Poplar wood dowel mounted on a mandrel and chucked into my Fordom handpiece, I punched small dents in the outer surface and rolled it in a wet paste of various tumbling grits. They were 220, 400 and 600. This was my sanding steps. 4. I polished it on a 3" diameter hard felt wheel with a stick of Zam as the polish. Bob
