Well after a few bad "computer days" I think it's finally running OK. I had problems allllllllllll day again and am sick and tired of pushing 1 and 2 and 1 and 3 and,,,,,, and then trying to understand the tech on the line! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr! So finally,,,,Here are the rocks after a combined run of 1000 grit and Tripoli Sorry for some fuzzy photo's but it's difficult to photograph (for me) the grain after the rocks have gone this far along.I just didn't have the patience left in me after the computer problem and it was getting late. Well some of the rocks came out fantastic but the majority of them just flat STINK. So they are all back in 1000 again and we'll just have to see what the outcome is. I'm probably trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear here but I'll give it my best shot before I send the rocks in for judgment day! These darn vibes keep ya movin and that's a fact Jack!! connrock

What a stunning result!
I am a brand new newby with my first batch of beach pebbles in the tumbler. I've read a book on tumbling and the manufacturer's instructions, it says rough to polish three weeks - nothing about fillers, culling, or any pictures to set your standars to, which caused me to ask many more questions than they answered. I joined this forum to try and pick up other's experiences. Yesterday I came across your series of posts on the competition. Your descriptions and your pictures have sorted out many of my queries and confusions. Being able to look at those photos and compare them to my own pebbles, I can see I have been going down the wrong path. Your posts allowed me to quantify pits and cracks and defects that otherwise would have made their way all through the process only to end up in a disappointment.
A HUGE thank you, connrock, you deserve to win the competition. For me, you are the winner already.

C'corn, Welcome and thank you so very much for the kind words!
There is just way too much info about tumbling to have it all in 1 book unless it was about 4" thick!
To make things worse there sooooooooooooo many different opinions and techniques the book just got thicker!
This web site is about 24" thick and growing every day.I doubt if you'll find better info anywhere. All you have to do is ask!
good luck,,,,,,,
N'S'Rocks, Thanks, Yeah they are coming along but not as nice as I would have liked.
N'nut, Glad ya like them.I usually mess things up when I try to make them better but that's how we all learn.

Looking good Tom! They better be judging you on the quality of the shape and shine, not on the quality of the rock. Like they say in my business: garbage in = garbage out. I think you've done a really fine job with this load, though. It should be a level playing field, so everybody will have the same quality rough.
So will you polish, too, or just stop after Tripoli? I've been stopping after the Tripoli and been meaning to run a batch through polish for comparison.

Tom, I've been watching every stage you have posted. Man, you are so hard on yourself and those rocks but boy those puppies are shiney and though I don't tumble, your posts sure have increased an appreciation for the amount of attention and work needed to get a first class shine.

Hi connrock,
My condolences regarding your computer problems! That happens to be my specialty, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask. It's the least I could do after all the help you have provided to me on this board!!
Your batch is looking good! And thanks for helping all of us newcomers too! We stumbled on a real gem!

We the computer went bonkers again yesterday evening and again this morning! Grrrrrrrrrr. The techs are very pleasant, courteous and professional but they ALL speak too soft, talk WAY to fast and with an East Indian accent. The women ALL have "squeaky" voices so I try to get a male tech but good luck with that too!!! If this is progress give me back white bread wrapped in wax paper any day!!!!
Kin ya tell I've HAD IT??? LOL
I didn't DARE look at the rocks this morning but will try to work up the courage after I get finished here.
H'R'C, I don't know what the heck happened after the 1000/Tripoli run but the rocks had some VERY fine scratches and in many places were under cut so they are in straight 1000 now.
I don't know if they will go into polish after the Tripoli. It will be a judgment call at that point.
S.N.W, Thanks, Well it really doesn't have to be quite as difficult as this may seem but you know how it goes when you are trying to accomplish something that you knew was going to be a challenge right from the git go. If these rocks were Brazilian Agate I would have had them shining a long time ago but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
R'P'G Thanks, I wish they looked as good in person as they do in the photo's.It's usually the other way around! lol
G'V's, Thanks, If we lived closer I would take you up on the computer offer!!The sell a book called Windows for Dummies. I need the Windows for Vegetables version and a translator would come in handy while speaking to the techs! lol
I'm sorry I stubbed your toe!! On another subject,,,,
I wrote a very long detailed reply to your other post about tumbling media but that's when the computer thought it was time to put a stop to it and POW!! I lost the whole reply when I tried to preview it. I just don't have it in my heart to 1 finger type all over again,,,,,maybe later after the steam stops coming out of my ears! lol
a disgusted,,,,,,,,ANGRY
