Just got back from a full day at the East Coast show in Springfield, Mass. The show’s open all weekend (Aug 8 & 9) and worth a trip if you’re anywhere near. The special exhibit this year is the private collection of Gail and Jim Spann, mineral dealers from Texas. Had to be 60 cases full of wowsers! Only took two pics, but it was a nice rock. Rutilated quartz – maybe 7 or 8” x 6” x 3” – water clear and the rutile needles are about 2’ long.

Question:
In Rutile Quartz, the needles look like real gold. Are They?

Chas – Rutile is a discrete mineral, just like quartz. The needles that you see in the quartz are just one of several forms it takes – it can also form as “regular looking” crystals, or look like an indistinct (massive) rock. Color can range from red to black, but the needle form is usually golden.
